Toy Selectah
Bersa Discos #5 EP
digital cumbia
Bersa Discos makes further in-roads into the Cumbia scene with this six tracker from Mexico's Toy Selectah (who is also slated for an upcoming Mad Decent release). The selection starts off with the hypnotic "Lamento En La Jungla(1)," which samples an obscure Cumbia-psyche track by Los Mirlos. The dowtempo "Hay Guey(2)" maintains a traditional Cumbia feel, enhanced by some well-placed drums. "Cocobola(3)" represents the first "Raverton" track here, which is a sped-up version of Cumbia / Reggaeton. B-side begins with a Boys Noize remix(4) done up Cumbia style, lots of crossover potential here (also a great transitional track for DJs). From there the EP gets deeper into club mode with two versions(5,6) of "Mundo Querido," a thick song which features Batucada-style percussion. Excellent consistency throughout, but really, where else are you going to find this stuff? Limited to 500 vinyl copies.

Rob Symeonn & Ticklah
Rob I Land / One Way Road (Antibalas) 12"
Brooklyn is back in the building. Victor Axelrod is back in his Ticklah tracksuit. Rob Symeonn is back on the mic voicing a pair of future roots classics. And the Concent label is back with another quality release to make sure that the world hears this musical heartbeat. Having been collaborators for many years and having worked together to create the still-ubiquitous "Chosen One," you know what to expect when these two join forces. This is real roots music with real righteous talk that sounds just as striking in a pair of headphones as it does on a serious sound system. "Rob I Land(1)" is heavy on the haunting vocal content, but also stays grounded with a thick bassline and a steady stream of subtle flourishes which betrays the fact that Ticklah still works by meticulously creating an aray of sounds from which he carves the clear and uncluttered productions that allow Symeonn's voice to shine through. Addition by subtraction is the true reggae way. Do work! On the flip, Victor invites his Antibalas bandmates and sudden celebrities to take a little break from doing things like backing up Public Enemy with the Roots on the Jimmy Fallon show and providing the music for the soon to be Broadway Fela musical to come and lay down the majestic horns that anchor the militant rockers tune "One Way Road(2)." I love the way the vocals sit in the mix on this one. They have a gentle quality to them which provides a perfect contrast to the hard drums and rolling bass line. There is also a dub for each side and if you know Ticklah's work then you know this means two completely new interpretations that stand alone as songs on their own. He's not just throwing some Ras Trent delays on these things! It's getting more and more difficult to get new, quality reggae on vinyl these days, let alone a twelve inch with four strong cuts. Do yourself a favor and grab one of these loud and clean pressings and put some conciousness back in the dance, Recommended.

Trackademicks
Enjoy What You Do (Flosstradamus Remix) 12"
Highly anticipated Fool's Gold debut from Bay Area rapper/producer Trackademicks. Trackademicks has been making waves for years via mixtapes, remixes and original productions so it's about damn time he got some official shine. "Enjoy What You Do(1)" is an uptempo Bay Area slapper, that sounds like a hip-house track dipped in hyphy sauce. Flosstradamus step up to the remix plate, injecting some rave juice into the original by adding big synth stabs and stuttered vocals. The single also features "Topsidin'(3)," a more subdued hip-hop track, built on a moderate tempo from layered ethereal synths. Also includes instrumentals for both tracks. Recommended.

Martyn
Great Lengths 3LP
Pre-release buzz on this dubstep full length has rivaled that of Burial self-titled album in 2006. Dutchman Martyn, known to be one of the most liberal interpreters of the genre, cuts his music with equal amount of techno. There's also a bit of UK dance sensibility thrown in there, which gives the sound that instant appeal (check the "Right? Star!(1)" which harks back to Orb's dance singles). At other points, Martyn is brilliantly solemn: on "Seventy Four(2)" he goes for depth and simplicity... you don't want this track to end. And like the Burial album, Martyn incorporates vocals in a very interesting way, check out "These Words(3)" and "Is This Insanity(4)," both which advance the West London sound of early 2000. Lastly, throughout the album, you'll think that Martyn is sampling classic techno riffs, but he's really creating them (at points, you think you're listening to a vintage Djax record). Check "Elden Street(5)" and "Hear Me(6)." Triple 12" vinyl version includes a fold-out poster. Recommended.

Jaimie Fanatic
Whats Happening To Ya (Say Wut Remix) 12"
What you know about Jaimie Fanatic? The Dutch house bad boy is the latest addition to the Mad Decent fam, and though this is his debut release on the label, he is by no means a newbie to the game (just check his discogs entry). Take a listen to the hybrid dance styles of "What's Happening(1)" and it's obvious dude has had plenty of experience rocking the massive crowds. A killer combination of house, electro, fidget, and even some bmore elements make this one huge with the likes of Diplo, Switch, Laidback Luke and Armand Van Helden. Speaking of bmore though, Unruly representer Say Wut turns in a hard hitting bmore remix(1) of the track that's sure to tear the roof off. Also check "Someone To Count On(2)," which takes up the entire b-side on the more minimal vocal house tip. Recommended.

Rye Rye
Bang (feat. M.I.A.) 12"
Rye Rye's been making noise as a guest artist for years, with her weird sped-up, marble-mouthed delivery, but now the girl finally gets a release to herself. "Bang(1)" finds her once again teamed up with Blaqstarr, who creates a chaotic beat built from multiple drum layers, machine gun samples and what sounds like a woman speaking French. MIA shows up on the hook, repeating the title of the track over and over while Rye Rye catches her breath in between hyperactive verses. Also includes clean, instrumental and acapella versions.

Authentic Wooden LP Picture Frame
These are actual antique wooden record frames. The wood has aged beautifully giving the frame a rich golden brown color. There is no glass on these frames, which in my opinion, is a superior way to display your favorite records. In addition, the frame features a slot opening on top, which allows you to switch out your records effortlessly. These are also super-easy to hang, just use a push-pin on the wall and the frame will naturally hang on it without any additional hardware. Simple, good-looking, affordable (cheaper than the metal ones), what more could you want? Recommended.

SL 3 - Serato Scratch Live
OVERVIEW
The SL 3 is the long awaited, upgraded version of the popular SL 1 Serato interface. This new version boasts much improved audio quality thanks to 24-bit audio processing, better dynamic range, USB 2.0 connectivity, and auxiliary inputs/outputs all in a light, compact unit.
FEATURES
Like the world standard SL 1, the SL 3 connects one or two standard vinyl or CD turntables to your computer and the mixer of your choice. Using regular turntables or CD players, you can scratch and mix files from your Mac or Windows computer's CD or hard drive with the control records or CDs.
The newly enhanced, premium grade preamps and 24-bit audio processing allows the compact new SL 3 to produce a richer, warmer sound than its predecessor. The new auxiliary outputs
allow DJs and electronic musicians to intensify the mix with the Scratch Live SP-6 Sample Player. The auxiliary inputs provide a live input feed for creative sampling or recording your set. Use any combination of audio sources: control CD, control vinyl, MIDI or regular CDs and vinyl for more flexibility than ever.
In addition, the SL3 comes with software switchable Direct Thru connections which means less cable required, independent line/phono-level selection for each input for greater flexibility, galvanic isolation prevents computer noise from interfering with audio path, and included international power supply and soft carry case.
MAIN UPGRADES
- new auxiliary input to take the record out of your mixer and send signal back in to serato to record your live sets, mic sample, etc
- new 3rd output. In software upgrades to come this will be used for a 3rd deck, for now, it is used to send samples from the sample bank to a 3rd channel on your mixer. You CAN load full songs on this sample player as is
- one less set of cables to connect to mixer as the "thru" signal can be toggled in software now (if you wanted to use the 1200 or the CDJ to play a normal cd or record without disconnecting the entire setup)
- ships with Serato version 1.8.4 which is an adapted version of 1.8.3. fully stable and incorporates some of the new features in 1.9
- 24 bit instead of the previous 16 bit box
stronger USB connection to withstand wear and tear
- smaller and lighter design
- carrying case and power adapter included

Prefuse 73
Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian 2LP
With his 5th offering under his Prefuse 73 alias, Scott Herren takes a turn that is simultaneously psychedelic and beat driven. The familiar chops from his previous albums are joined by sounds and textures that seem to have migrated over from Mr. Herren's Savath and Savalas project. One of the shining examples of this can be found on "Simple Loop Choir(1)." The inclusion of Claudia Deheza and Roberto C. Lange - who've both contributed to Savath and Savalas -" has helped to build a bridge between the two projects and provide a psyche tinged bed for the beatsmith to build upon. Spacey experimentation gives way to head nodding beats while the sounds expand and contract in a myriad of ways. Choruses of voices build on top of each other until their chopped apart into obliteration. If you were ever wondering what your favorite Topanga Canyon hippie jam would sound like filtered through the MPC you can find it in "Four Reels Collide(2)." "Preperation's Kids Choir(3)" is classic Prefuse at his best. Beat switch-ups, little pieces of sounds used in ways you'd least expect and it's all held together in a way that you can only expect from the man himself. We're taken on a journey in the Prefuse beat machine through the sun drenched canyons of whatever alien planet is represented on the record's cover. The Lab's Gaslamp Killer pops up on "Gaslamp Killer Feedback Text(4)," giving us a taste of just how high these two dudes must get together. If you're looking for the perfect soundtrack for sunset drives down the Pacific coast, Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian is just what you need. Double vinyl pressing, 29 tracks in all.

Audio 4 Interface
Traktor Scratch Duo comes with Audio 4 DJ, USB bus-powered audio interface built specifically for DJing. This low-latency 24-bit/96 kHz interface uses high-end Cirrus Logic AD/DA converters for pristine audio quality â" just like its multi award-winning big brother AUDIO 8 DJ. Four switchable inputs and four hi-gain (9.7 dBu) outputs let you connect to an external mixer and turntables or CD decks in seconds.
Control Vinyl/CDs
The 2 kHz control signal of the included vinyl and CDs is twice the resolution of the competitors. Easy Setup
Traktor Scratch Duo is designed for easy set up and comes with a dedicated set of high-quality Multicore cables. Within seconds, you can hook up the AUDIO 4 DJ to your turntables / CD players and mixer and you're ready to rock. And with the included TRAKTOR DUO software you can also spin without CD decks and turntables using the internal mixer- perfect for preparing a set or rocking an after party.
OUR OPINION
Traktor Scratch Duo is an excellent full featured digital DJ solution. With Traktor Scratch Duo, you basically get all the essential features of Traktor Scratch Pro at a very affordable price. The main difference is the Audio 4 interface instead of an Audio 8, 2 deck control on Traktor Duo instead of 4 decks on Traktor Pro, and the lack of internal recording (but you can still record to an external source). All in all it is still a very complete and profesional digital DJ solution at a great price. Recommended.

Audio-Technica
AT618 Disc Stabilizer
We've been trying to get this in to the shop for awhile now, but they're hard to come by (sold only in Japan). Luckily our Japanese connect came through with a batch! The Audio Technica AT-618 is a rare accessory for DJ's that demand top quality sound and performance from their records. This hefty unit sits atop the record on the turntable spindle and applies 600grams of weight, holding the record firmly in place while stabilizing the record and improving overall sound quality. This is especially useful when playing in loud clubs where bass vibrations may be an issue or when recording your vinyl into your computer (for a cleaner recording). I've seen Jamal and Saheer of Super Family use these everytime they play out (they swear by them). The AT618 also covers your labels if you're concerned with trainspotters. Best when used with high torque turntables (will not work well with belt drive decks). Recommended.

Roctakon
Finding Directions CD
eclectic mix of disco, house, techno
One wise DJ once said that Roctakon is the Kenny Powers of DJing. I like to think of him as the Hank Moody of the scene. He might even have a mild case of tourette's. No one quite understands where he's coming from... or how he found himself in the most ironic situation of being one of the biggest and best club djs for bottle-service meatheads and the tramp-stamp masses. This CD is the result of this pickle... Roc quit club DJing for a minute, locked himself in his stanky LES apartment, and came up with this mix of the music he truly loves. For someone known to throwdown personalized Fatman Scoop edits and Britney jams, it's unsurprising to see that this is all about disco, house, and techno.... but even I was taken back by how hardcore it is. If you need to know more, check out the writing by Roc on the back of the CD... he gets personal. Over an hour, expertly mixed. 500 copies only, full digi-pack by PH (that's me). Recommended.

Po Po
Kill Tonight (Red Vinyl) 7"
A rock record from Mad Decent!? Believe it. Popo are the latest to put out a record on the Philly label, and even though it might not be showing up in your DJ set anytime soon, it definitely doesn't disappoint. "Kill Tonight(1)" has a lo-fi garage sound, reminiscent of 90s indie rock. On the flip, "Feel Good Song Of The Year(2)" approaches hazy lo-fi pop, definitely a hint of My Bloody Valentine or Suicide in this one. Of course the packaging is dope as hell too, the eyes on that lady are cut out, and it's pressed up on clear red vinyl. Plays at 45, recommended.

Ayres & Tittsworth
Balmer Loosies #3 (Baltimore) CD
T&A Records is back at it with another compilation of unmixed club jams. Ayres and Tittsworth always enlist talented producers on these CDs, but the latest one looks like it was pulled directly off of the Lab bestseller list. Ayres starts things off by teaming up with the Nadastrom boys for a track called "Fired Up(1)." DJ Sega chops up one of the most classic party breaks around on "Everybody Handz Up(2)," while Tittsworth gets his own productions remixed by both Bird Peterson(3) and Sammy Bananas(4). Top Billin' gets in on the act with "Willing(5)," as does the legendary DJ Technics, who contributes his moody remix of Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place(6)." Also includes Ayres' remix of James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose(7)," which was originally released as part of Gamm's JB remix collection. 16 tracks in all, definitely recommended.

Israeli funk outfit The Apples follow-up their impossible cover of Rage Against The Machine, with this even more impossible cover(1) of SNAP's "I GOT THE POWER." And that's no reviewers joke. The surrealness of these clips will have laughing until you puke(The original DVD's used to come with barfbags) and is a must have for anyone who appreciates gloriously bad acting,
cheap public access shows and wig flipping celebrity clips. "A Rich Tradition Of Magic" is actually a rerun of Pinky's fabled tape made in 1998, between "Ouch My Brain Hurts" and "When Television Attacks." Caution: some scenes are shocking, watch at your own risk! 80 min.

Shepard Fairey
Supply & Demand - 20th Anniversary Edition Book - SIGNED
lab exclusivo, signed by shepard fairey
LAB SEMI-EXCLUSIVO: These copies are signed by artist Shepard Fairey. Limited stock.
Special 20th anniversary edition of Supply & Demand - the definitive book on the artwork of Shepard Fairey. The book is now expanded (Tkat note: Also now included is a letter written to Shepard from Obama, which just reminds me of the incredible times we're living in. As you would expect the letter is eloquent and moving and pays respect to the influential nature of the now iconic image of our President(!) that became omnipresent throughout the campaign and now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery(!) alondside a long line of oil painted crackers who used to have a death grip on this shit.) and in an impresive black cover. This substantial book begins with Fairey's original Andre the Giant sticker and expands into Fairey's many different progressions and transformations. The book approaches the subject at a very grounded level, as most of the writing and all the captioning is in the first person. Fairey tells you the origins of his work, his favorite spots to bomb, influences, and all the interesting details. You really feel like you're having a detailed conversation with the man himself. In addition to showing the widest array of Fairey's work (the original artwork for Andre, all the Andre variations, the propaganda phase, those portraits, museum work, etc.), Fairey unveils many additional parts of his story like old vandalism tickets, newspaper clippings, letters, and much more. This is truly one of the best executed artist books I've encountered as it is very comprehensive, but more importantly it gets you behind the scenes. As I said, this book is rather substantial, measuring 12.5" x 9.5" and 2"(!) deep. The 450 pages (25 extra pages) are cased in a cloth-bound hardcover. Also includes an Obey poster folded inside. Highly recommended.

Ballplayers
Universal Language 7"
Peoples Potential coming through with one for the record heads AND the sports nerds! Ballplayers was a jam group started by Lenny Randle (ex-Mets player) and Thad Bosley (ex-White Sox) in the '80's. The two spent some of their Major League earings on studio time and put out 3 releases on Randle Enterprises (all of which are rare to come by). Now usually anytime a baseball (or any sport for that matter) player tries their hand at making music, the outcome is pretty damn awful (remember Deion Sanders' rap album? oyyy). But this is not the case with Ballplayers at all! The two put together truly outstanding tracks ranging from disco, soul, and even some leftfield electronic funk stuff. Check the soul on "American Worker(1)" (and those very relevant lyrics), the irresistable disco funk of "Universal Language(2)" and "Jam With Us(3)," and the cool out sounds of "Bos Music(4)." Small hole 45, with super cool pic sleeve. Recommended!

Sabo & Zeb
Global Warmbeats CD
latin-afro influenced dance + downtempo
Sabo & Zeb have been putting out best-selling 12"s for several years now on Wonderwheel and Sabo's own Sol Selectas imprint. Here they focus their energies on a full length on Italian label Irma. It's a great mix of their signature dancefloor cuts and multi-layered downtempo. "Cool NY(1)" is an awesome opener that flows into the female-fronted "Rise Again(2)." From there they get onto the dancefloor with "One Family(3)" and "Disco Down(4)." The album continues in this pleasing mish-mash fashion alternating from gypsy funk to chilled-out dub to energetic Brazilian numbers ("Nossa Coracao(5)") to funky breakbeats ("Cmon Feel It(6)"). 12 tracks in all.

No Sin / No Future Book - SIGNED
LAB EXCLUSIVO: these first batch of books is personally signed by Ryan McGinness. And it's not just a one-liner, Ryan fills up most of the page with doodles and quotes!
Ryan McGinness drops another limited edition book to document his mind spray aka the visual free jazz. This book looks like Ryan's brain threw up, but unlike a commoner's throw-up, Ryan's comes out in expertly splattered vectorizations, pixelations and flourishes. There's no concrete rhyme to the book, it's a mish-mash of snapshots, sketches, and scans from Ryan's studio. 2500 copies. Hardcover, 168 Pages, 216 x 279 mm. Recommended.

Nacho Lovers
Acid Life (DJ Eli & Jokers of the Scene) 12"
Nacho Lovers is the nom du dancefloor of Andrew Ross and Scott Seewhale, a pair of Torontonians who first bonded over a shared love of classic Chicago house and Detroit techno. These days, they're crafting some acidic, synth-draped dance neo-classics of their own, and their first official release for A-Trak and Catchdubs' imprint is already turning heads. (They just got off the mega Fool's Gold Remixed tour with a whole slew of their labelmates.) Whether it's the chugging, hyper-repetitive throb of "Acid Life(1)," the jagged, soul-sampling "Go On(2)," or one of the excellent remixes they got here - might I suggest DJ Eli / Eli Escobar's Bmore-ified take on "Acid Life(3)"? - there's some serious heat for your winter crate contained herein. Also includes a remix from label homies and fellow Canadians Jokers of the Scene(4). Recommended.

Jokers Of The Scene
Acid Bagg (White Vinyl) 12"
Second EP on Fool's Gold from those beat-loving Canadians in Jokers of the Scene, DJ Booth and Chameleonic. Picking up on an even rave-ier tip than where "Y'all Know The Name" left off, "Baggy Bottom Boys(1)" is a buzzing, pumping acid house affair - a true new rave epic if I've ever heard one. "Acidrod(2)" goes off on a more minimal and (surprise!) acidic tip with a nod to Nate Dogg / Dre / Axelrod, then gets fitted with some Parisian thump courtesy of Brodinski(3). Also includes a nasty Destroy Disco remix(4). Pressed up on pristine white vinyl. So recommended.

Chill Pill
Chill Pill Mobile Speakers
smartly designed portable speakers
Wired's "Best Mobile Gizmo" of 2008. Chill Pill speakers are highly portable, pocket-sized speakers that can be transported in "pill" form (ingeniously held together by magnets). colllection of diplo remixes
Doesn't it seem like it was yesterday that Thingamajawn was coming out on Money Studies? And now the guy's nominated for a Grammy. They grow up so fast! This CD kind of serves as an early career retrospective, featuring a selection of both early original productions and official remixes that have been released over the last few years. Early cuts like "Newsflash(1)" mingle with productions for other artists (Kano's "Reload It(2)" and, the mother of them all, "Paper Planes(3)") as well as remixes for artists like Hot Chip(4), CSS(5) and Peter, Bjorn and John(6). The CD also features a bonus media folder containing MP3s for the other versions of Diplo Riddim (Pantera Os Danadinhos' "Percao" and Vybz Kartel's "Baby"), the Johnny Blaze Remix of "Way More" off of the Florida LP, Diplo's remix of Spoon's "Don't You Evah," as well as the video for "Percao." 15 Tracks total, Recommended.

FEATURES
Performance and quality are what Rane is known for and the TTM56S delivers. Additional upgrades include both 1/4" and 3.5 mm headphone jacks (in case you misplace that adapter), transform switches that are now kill switches, and simplified operation created by putting all the controls you need on top, and increasing the width of the unit by one inch.
All the original TTM56 features that made the mixer so popular are still present including powerful "Accelerated Slope" High, Mid and Low EQs that go from +6db to Off on both channels, non-contact magnetic crossfader and up faders with hamster switches and contour curve designed to never bleed or crackle, post-fader FlexFX which allows for external reverb and echo delay effects to respond to fader action, and mic input with EQ and dedicated effects loop.
OUR OPINION
This TTM56 has proven to be a great mixer that DJs can trust, and with the improvements on the TTM56S it's sure to be around for a long time. The mixer performs like a champ and has top notch features all around, from powerful EQs, effects control, and incredible feeling faders that last. An excellent choice for any style of DJ. Fool's Gold Remixed (Rusko, Chromeo, Surkin) 12"
lab exclusivo release
The Fool's Gold Remixed comp was among last Fall's most enjoyable releases, featuring a slew of the young label's biggest hits remade by everyone from DJ Spinna and Chromeo to the Lab's own Blu Jemz. And it was free! That's gotta rank up there with the Biggie / Craig Mack "Big Mack" burger cassette in the history of "World's Greatest Promos." The bounty continues with this limited edition, promo only 12" featuring four of the compilation's biggest records: Chromeo's take on Treasure Fingers' "Cross The Dancefloor(1)," French whiz kid Surkin's rework of Nacho Lovers' "Acid Life(2)," Rusko's funky (and Kanye-free) dubstep take on Kid Sister's "Pro Nails(3)," and a dreamy new version of Kid Cudi's international smash "Day 'N' Nite(4)" by techmeister Jori Hulkkonen. Turntable Lab picked up the remaining copies, and when they're gone, they're GONE - this is your only chance to get these songs on vinyl so act fast, buckaroo.

NanoPad Slim-Line USB MIDI Controller - Black
compact and affordable, great for live performances
Now in black!
OVERVIEW
Korg's Nano series are the most compact USB-MIDI controllers on the market. These slim line controllers give you versatile control over your programs in the studio, at home, or on the road at a very affordable price. This is the impressive pad version with 12 drum pads, X-Y pad, and chord trigger function.
FEATURES
The nanoPAD is a bus powered USB-MIDI controller featuring 12 excellent feeling, super responsive pads (similar to the padKONTROL) and an X-Y pad with 'roll' and 'flam' modes all in an ultra compact and slim frame about the width of most laptops. The nanoPAD also boasts a unique Chord Trigger function that lets you enter chords onto a single pad, helping you to make the most of the work surface as you create. The pads are also able to transmit control change messages, making this a great interface for soloing or muting mixer tracks, turning objects on and off, or triggering clips during your live performances. With the "KORG KONTROL Editor" (downloadable free of charge from the Korg website) you can customize four scenes that address the pads and X-Y pad can be stored within nanoPAD to suit your control needs. That means you actually have access to 48 notes/chords, 60 MIDI controllers, or any combination of the two types of data at any given time. Also, select one of three velocity curves or a fixed velocity to tailor the nanoPAD to your touch. Use the nanoPAD for versatile control over your production software, virtual instrument/effect or DJ software to trigger samples.
OUR OPINION
If you're looking for an extremely portable USB-MIDI controller at an affordable price, look no further. You cannot get much smaller than the nanoPAD, but despite its small size, it has features that are comparable with much bulkier and higher priced controllers. This model will especially appeal to centric producers that want to be able to bang out drums and sequences on the go. Recommended.

Congorock
Runark (Jokers Of The Scene Remix) Digi-EP
italian rave-influence club music, hype
LAB PRE-ADVANCE EXCLUSIVO! Congorock is part of a new breed of Italian producers (Congorock, Bloody Beetroots) making hyped-up, hybrid club music. His particular tunes might be the most ravey of the bunch - 2 Bad Mice-y breakbeats, ghetto house stomp and heavy blasts of synths. "Runark" is his intense dancefloor debut on Fool's Gold. The 8 bit anthem comes backed with an amazingly prog-y extended remix from labelmates Jokers Of The Scene, as well as two more originals "Exodus" (is that Busta chopped up?) and "Hybro." Heat all around, reccomended!

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
Flipside CD
lab exclusivo, live soul jazz from bklyn
I've been following the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble for a couple years now, and I swear they're on the verge of worldwide fame. These group of brothers (all sons of legendary soul jazz musician Philip Cohran) made a name for themselves playing on the streets of NYC (Washington Square Park and Union Square). It's an incredible thing to see a full brass band blowing away on the pavement (or subway station), not to mention the always funky drummer pounding out the crispest beats. Recently, these guys have been making serious moves, getting flown all over Europe, opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and signing to the UK's Honest Jon's imprint. And if you've seen them live in a venue, you know what I'm talking about when I say "worldwide"... too much talent and charisma. These CDs are straight from the band (same as the ones you can pick up at their shows), and all come highly recommended. If previous vinyl releases from Hypnotic are any indication, these will go fast (and restocks will be sporadic). This is elusive, debut "Orange" album from 2001 and features 9 tracks. Recommended.

Trackademicks
Enjoy What You Do / Topsidin (Flosstradamus, Sammy Bananas) Digi-EP
Fool's Gold debut from the Bay Area rapper/producer
Highly anticipated Fool's Gold debut from Bay Area rapper/producer Trackademicks. Trackademicks has been making waves for years via mixtapes, remixes and original productions so it's about damn time he got some official shine. "Enjoy What You Do" is an uptempo Bay Area slapper, that sounds like a hip-house track dipped in hyphy sauce. Flosstradamus step up to the remix plate, injecting some rave juice into the original by adding big synth stabs and stuttered vocals. Trackademicks' label mate Sammy Bananas brings a little disco into the picture with an old funk break and some seriously big basslines. The single also features "Topsidin," a more subdued hip-hop track, built on a moderate tempo from layered ethereal synths. Also included is the clean version for "Enjoy What You Do" and instrumentals for both tracks. Recommended.

Cousin Cole & Pocketknife
Flagrant Fowl 005 EP
Perennial lab favorites Cousin Cole and Pocketknife are back with another round of white label remixes. Pocketknife leads off this time, adding his touch to Scandinavian indie darling Lykke Li's "Breaking It Up(1)." Pknife layers hand claps, tambourines and snare rolls together to give the track a strobelight makeover, and the result is fantastic moody disco that's perfect for this time of year. On the flip, Cuz Cole offers up not one but two Kanye remixes. First up is "Love Lockdown(2)," which gets put through the disco-house machine and comes out the other side with swirling strings and filters galore. This one's already getting lots of play from A-Trak (who's said it's the only "Love Lockdown" remix he fucks with), Bird Peterson and Willy Joy, among others. Also includes Cole's sped up hip-house take on Kanye's "Champion(3)." Hand-stamped white label pressing, limited to 900 copies world wide. Recommended.

Beat Konducta, Vol.6: Dil Withers Suite LP
Beat Konducta #6 = the second half of Lib and J.Rocc's heartfelt tribute to their man J.Dilla, and as you might've guessed, uhhh, shit is ridiculous. I think on this volume, the genius kicks in around track three - "Lifetime(1)" - and it's a wrap from there. As usual there are 20-something tracks - you could click on pretty much any of them and find something to like, but try these. Check: "Another Bag of Bomb(2)," "Detroit Playaz(3)," "Dillalade Ride(4)," "The Sky(5)," "Another Batch(6)." Then get the whole album, 'cause... damn. Recommended.

Justice: A Cross The Universe CD + DVD
Justice have had a mind-blowing two year run of gigs, shows, appearances, and whatever (why am I picturing doing lines off some hot model chick's boney ass?). This tour DVD, put together by Justice, Romain Gavras, and So-Me, attempts to capture the madness by documenting three long weeks of touring. They taped every waking second of the three weeks and condensed it into this one hour plus documentary. They exclusively focus on the off-stage life in the video, but they've also included the performance aspect on a bonus audio disc, featuring 18 tracks from their San Francisco date. Craziness is an understatement. Recommended.
- 60 minute plus documentary
- bonus audio disc featuring live performance, 18 tracks

Stokyo
Dr. Suzuki Slipmats: The Donuts (Pair)
LAB US EXCLUSIVO! Dr. Suzuki's been getting busy in his Lab to cook up more slipmat innovations for all the turntablists out there. "The Donuts" are his latest creation (previously only available in Japan) and make manipulating 45's much easier than any other slipmats out there. The Donuts facilitate and enhance scratching and cueing 7"s by making them "feel like" standard 12"s. It works by placing the Donuts on a standard 12", then the 7" on the Donut and voila! The Donuts grip on to the 12" making it possible to manipulate the 12" and thus manipulate the 7". Works best with metal 45 adaptors. Recommended.

The Brick Bandits (DJ Sega, Tameil, Rob3) EP
baltimore club via philly
Longtime Holler associate Dirty South Joe's Ol' Head Records co-presents this loaded EP with Diplo's Mad Decent label as Jersey's Brick Bandits unleash six extra-strength no-frills Baltimore club tracks. A-side features DJ Sega's "Colours(1)" with the robot voice repeating "I love the different colours, all the different colours...," plus DJ B-Stee's straightforward club rework of Daft Punk's "Robot Rock(2)" and Tim Dolla's "Number Advisory(3)," a party break with hype vocals just counting it off ("one! two! three! four! one! two! three! four!"). Flip it for DJ Tameil's "Shotgun Buck(4)" (shotgun blasts and Nintendo sounds!), DJ Rob3's wailing "The Chase(5)," layered with police sirens and 90s house key stabs, and Mike V's mellow "Feelings(6)." Easy call here. Recommended.

Diplo
Blow Your Head (with FREE MP3 Download) EP
diplo reworks the jbs into madness
Now on vinyl! Each copy includes a code redeemable for a high quality (320kbps) MP3 download of the full EP. Diplo's first proper solo release on Mad Decent is major. He finally delivers his version of the JB classic "Blow Your Head(1)." We first heard this mutant - half breed - mongoloid a couple years back on a Mad Decent Radio mix, but it's been under wraps since. Wicked wicked drums is all I have to say. "Must Be A Devil(2)" has a spaghetti western feel about it, another one of Diplo's strange concoctions that creeps into your brain. (It's a sort of rework of Pixies' "Hey" with ex-Bonde Do Role frontwoman Marina on vocals.) On the flip we get four remixes of "Wassup Wassup" featuring rising Bmore vocalist Rye Rye. I think DJ Sega(3) takes the honors amongst the big names (Crookers, Bart Bmore), watch for this kid.

Vestax
VCI-300 USB DJ Controller w/ Serato ITCH w/ $100.00 Rebate
USB DJ controller w/ custom Serato version
SPECIAL REBATE: Purchase the VCI-300 between 11/1/2009 and 12/31/2009 and get $100 back by mail-in rebate. click for rebate form
OVERVIEW
The VCI-300 is the brainchild of Vestax and Serato - a dedicated USB MIDI controller and with the included Serato ITCH DJ software. This sleek and portable unit also comes with a built in audio interface with standard 2in/4out RCA and headphone connection which means all you need for DJing is the VCI-300, a laptop and a set of headphones. No turntables or mixer necessary. In addition, the unit is incredibly portable and easy to set up.
FEATURES
HIGH RESOLUTION CONTROL
The VCI-300 can control more than 90 parameters and functions of the included Serato software with high resolution MIDI signals sent via USB. The pulse resolution of the JOG wheel and pitch control fader is 4 times higher than the VCI-100 and provides precise control of each function. The pitch control fader also shares the same high quality fader parts of the input fader for advanced operability.
SUPERB AUDIO CHARACTERISTIC
The built-in audio interface carries a Audio Codec IC with superb audio characteristic, generated by a delta-sigma modulation 24 bit stereo D/A-A/D converter. Audio connection includes 1 stereo input, 1 MIC input and 2 stereo output (Master L/R, Monitor L/R).
LEVEL INDICATION
A 12 level LED L/R indicator is set in the center of the top panel to monitor sound levels.
FILE CONTROL
Audio files in the software library can be easily selected and controlled with the CRATES / FILES / BROWSE key and the cursor switch inherited from the VCM-100.
EMERGENCY THRU SWITCH
The Emergency Thru Switch located on the rear panel is a countermeasure where you can use the VCI-300 with the provided ITCH software or without the computer connected if you simply want to play music from your external CD or MP3 player. The ITCH software reads music from your iTunes library or the Serato library you use for Scratch LIVE, making it the perfect device for recreational or professional DJ's.
ADJUSTABLE JOG WHEEL TORQUE
The torque of each JOG wheel can be adjusted to prevent them from moving from low frequency feedback and altering the pitch when using the VCI-300 in such places like clubs.
FADER CURVE CONTROL
The fader curve of each fader can be adjusted to the preferred characteristics for long mixes, scratching and any other style.
OUR OPINION
The VCI-300 is an impressive all-in-one digital djing solution. Everything you need is included in the box except for your laptop and headphones. This is a great unit for those not interested in owning a pair of turntables or a mixer and just want to focus solely on digital djing. The price tag might seem steep, but when you consider the fact you are getting an all-in-one unit with Serato ITCH that requires no turntables or mixer (which can run well over $1000), it is actually a deal.

Illa J
Yancey Boys Instrumentals (J. Dilla) Digi-LP
Dilla produced beats
This is the instrumental version of Yancey Boys and if you're a Dilla fan, you'll probably like this over the regular version. No diss to his younger bro Illa J, but I prefer these beats sans vocals, letting them really breathe. You can't deny Dilla's golden touch on the MPC as felt on stand out beats like We Here, Timeless, Illasoul, Sounds Like Love, Everytime, and Air Signs. 13 tracks total.

Mayer Hawthorne & The County
Just Ain't Gonna Work Out Digi-12
irresistible 60's soul grooves with a modern touch
DIGI EXCLUSIVE! If you missed out on the heart-shaped vinyl, here's you're chance to get the tracks in high quality digital format! It's easy to hear why Just Ain't Gonna Work Out has been on constant rotation here at the Lab (as well as being praised by the likes of Mark Ronson and Gilles Peterson). The refreshing 60's soul grooves topped with Mayer Hawthorne's infectious, falsetto singing style have confused many (including this reviewer) into thinking this was either some old rare 45 or some kind of break beat re-edit, but believe it or not, this is actually a completely original song - produced, played, AND sung by a 29-year old white dude from Michigan! For real, this kid's got soul. Check the late nite slow jam When I said Goodbye for even more proof. I predict big things in the near future for Hawthorne - he's definitely bringing the realness. Highly Recommended.

Soho
Soho (Hot Music) Digi-EP
all-time classic house track, crossover
Maybe this signals the digital floodgates in terms of classic NYC house music. Soho's "Hot Music" is a house track that's made the rare crossover to the hip-hop crowds. You'll even find this acceptable in the middle of a soul classic set. DJs have been using this to transition to and from house (or vice-versa) for years. There's not much more to say about this soulful, jazzed-out all-timer. This digital EP includes several other Soho tracks including the 2003 revisited versions "More Hot Music" and "Subway Series," plus the downtempo track "Keep It Together" which references the Raphael Saadiq's "Get Involved." Highly recommended.

Michna
Magic Monday Digi-LP
fresh downtempo meets electronica sounds on Ghostly
Otherwise known in the Lab circuit as the one and only Egg Foo Young, roll the red carpet for Michna's first album! Sure, going with the real name moniker doesn't sound as fun as the party rocking, Miami Bass, electro, D & B loving Egg Foo that we all know, but it is his first solo album on Ghostly, which a giant step in artistic maturity. Don't let it fool you though, all the influences I just mentioned are still there, only fused with his passion for hip hop, downtempo beats, and writing ill horn parts on trombone. Just listen to "Swiss Glide" for a perfect example. Other tracks like his "Triple Chrome Dipped" quickly turned heads with a style that combines leftfield electronic vibes with Bmore style rhythms and electro(check the Boy Cat Bird video for it on Cartoon Network). The entire LP follows suit, fusing together different styles into an original sound that's ultimately modern. Check the thick as funk sounds of "Skunk Walk," the downtempo meets the 80's vibe of "Bumper Car Masters," the experimental electronic sounds of "Raw Paw" and the bass on "Redline Flights" and "Avante." Hopefully we'll see vinyl soon...Recommended.

NanoKey Slim-Line USB Keyboard
OVERVIEW
Korg's Nano series are the most compact USB-MIDI controllers on the market. These slim line controllers give you versatile control over your programs in the studio, at home, or on the road at a very affordable price. This is the highly functional keyboard version.

If you're looking for an extremely portable USB-MIDI keyboard at an affordable price, look no further.
