Italians Do It Better

The Chromatics are on fire lately and are popping up everywhere I look - DJ Dixon's Body Language mix, the After Dark CD, and the Italians Do It Better 12's, etc...I see what's going on. Ruth Radelet is actually a...   expand review  powerful mage and we're all quickly falling under her spell. If those releases weren't powerful enough, they go ahead and give us the NIGHT DRIVE SOUNDTRACK! Whether this is a real soundtrack to a movie is unclear, and frankly, I don't give a damn. Sure it would be awesome to see the beautiful Ruth Radelet starring in a film, but I'm just happy to hear more of her music. "Night Drive(1)" is the only track I've seen appear on another comp. That means 9 tracks of all new material! Sweet for you (and me -Ed.). Now you have tons of new music to make-out to. The cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill(2)" is an awesome slow burner especially good for the fireplace, while "Healer(3)" and "Tomorrow Is So Far Away(4)" brings the beat to the heat for that extra bump. The saucy synthwork with Ruth's poetic vocals is magically seductive and will have you demanding multiple listens. And just in case you're not in the mood for words, there's the instrumentals "I Want Your Love(5)" and "Let's Make This A Moment To Remember." Sounds like Smokey Robinson singles? Not quite, but they are smokey for sure. Highly Recommended. -C'mish

Sounds of the Cosmos
format: CD

lab price: $22.00

Been on a HUGE disco kick lately and this is perfect timing. The tastemakers are back with a brand new selection of cosmic disco tracks. Although it's called Cosmic Disco, I will admit it does stray off the wormhole a bit here...   expand review  and there. There are the rare disco heaters you would expect from the Idjuts, like BWO's insane "Stop" (which makes the whole mix worth it for me, I need a full copy of this!), Hot Chocolate's "Mindless Boogie," "Pacific Blue's "You Gotta Dance," but it also includes some new disco gems like Lindstrom's epic "Another Station" and the Todd Terje's funky work on "Eurodans." As a bonus, he also takes it there with awesome throwbacks like the Specials' "A Message To You Rudy," Stealers Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" (remember Resevoir Dogs) and BT Express' "Do It Till Your Satisfied." I don't know how spacey those are, but the familiarity is an appealing end note. -C'mish

10-piece Cali funk outfit Orgone came out of left field a few years back with a blazing cover of "Funky Nassau(1)," and they haven't let up since. Their pair of singles on Ubiquity - "I Get Lifted(2)" and "Duck & Cover(3)" -...   expand review  are tough to keep in stock here at das Lab, so it appears you guys are already up on their tight, soulful sound. All I have to say is... this full length does not disappoint. Including those already-tested covers, plus a sultry female vocal'd version of Isaac Hayes' "Do Your Thing(4)," the Orgone guys (and gal) show a reverence for the 70s grooves that directly influence their sound. But the dozen or so original compositions here speak even more loudly toward their skills: the elastic AM soul of "It's What You Do(5)" and extended space synth jam "Hambone(6)" seem to say Orgone aren't just funk revivalists, but gifted songwriters born in the wrong decade. Very impressive stuff. 17 tracks; 76 minutes. Recommended. -Larri Byrd

Quite impressive. Prins Thomas is quickly gaining ranks as one of my favorite producers, selectors, and remix DJ's out there. I review a lot of music here and collect as a determined hobby and I'll tell you, it doesn't take...   expand review  long to find that the spectrum of music collecting is a world much larger than I could have imagined. Just when you thought you had everything worth getting, someone like Prins Thomas will school you with a slew of hidden tracks that you never thought existed. Rare disco, funk, electronic, rock, ambient, minimal, outsider, italo, balearic, jazz, and the uncategorizable - its all in here. At the very least, the tracklist alone is a true inspiration. The whole mix is over 2 hours long(hence the 2 cd's), and courteously mixed by P. Thom himself to make a smooth journey through tasteful selection after tasteful selection. A must have for anyone looking to blow the doors wide open on the range of musical possibilities out there. Here's just a few of my favorites out of 36 tracks...Obviously, this is recommended. Rey De Copas - "Frontera Del Ensueno - (Grid Caramba Dub)" Electric South's "Sing (Unabombers Electric North Remix)" Carlos Hernandez' - "Roller Giggle" Soylent Green - "Camera Obscura" Boards Of Canada - "Nilogax" Lindstrom - "Another Station" Bob James - "Moon Bop" The Salsoul Invention - "Soul Machine" Matias Aguayo - "Radiotaxi" Recloose - "Cardiology" Zombi - "Sapphire" Honeymoon Killers - "Decollage" Tres Demented - "She'z Satan" Musiccargo - "Ich Geh Den Weg Mit Dir" Paper Dolls - "Get Down Boy" Parliament - "Night Of The Thumpasaurus Peoples" -C'mish

The After Dark CDR was originally only available on Glass Candy's '07 west coast tour (only 100 pressed!). Due to popular demand (and the fact that this shit is REALLY REALLY good), the guys over at Italian's Do It Better repressed the...   expand review  joint and now you too can have a piece of this modern disco hotness. This isn't a mixtape either (though it kinda looks like one) - it actually contains full unreleased tracks and demo versions from soon-to-be-huge new disco/new italo artists Glass Candy, Mirage, Chromatics, Farah, and Professor Genius. Just check some of these sounds: The sweet and soulful disco grooves of Glass Candy with "Rolling Down The Hills(1)," their take on the Kraftwerk classic "Computer Love(2)," and Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway(3)," the bittersweet italo vibes of the Chromatics with "Hands In The Dark(4)" and "In The City(5)," and Mirage's spaced-out italo vocoder action on "Lady Operator(6)" and "Lake Of Dreams(7)," and the avant slow motion disco sickness that is Farah's "Dancing Girls(8)." 14 tracks total, no throw aways. Do not miss this if you are a fan of the disco-italo sound (you'll regret it - trust me). Recommended. -snackmaster

Music For Dreams

Yes. This is easily one of my favorite sounds we carry at the Lab. When you get the yearning for a warm sun, clear sky, and a sangria in your hand, it's Balearic time. The seductive power of the music fuses the...   expand review  flavors of house, R&B, latin, funk, dub and electro - basically all the influences of the music sorrounding the Balearic islands of Ibiza. Call it a sexy stew, if you will. For a prime example, click on the sample for Max Berlin's "Elle Et Moit - Cicada Remix(1)" and Cantoma's "The Call - ft. Pathaan(2)." The beats are slow and heavy (around 101 bpm) and surrounds you with a breeze of warm moonlit beach at night. Perfect for the ladies. Also, one of our bestselling artists, The Knife, has a track on here with "Pass This On(3)" which brings back the chill sounds of Roxy Music with steel drums and their patented siren-like vocals. Frontera's "Rouge(4)" turns the funky up and Blaze's "When I Think Of You - ft. Amira(5)" kills it on the R&B tip. For every mood of chill, you got it on here. Essential for warming up a crowd and to mabye a special someone. Imagine, this cd, then some small talk, then break out some exotic cheeses and wine...it's a wrap sonn! Definitely recommended. -C'mish
