Italians Do It Better

The Chromatics are on fire lately and are popping up everywhere I look - DJ Dixon's Body Language mix, the After Dark CD, and the Italians Do It Better 12's, etc...I see what's going on. Ruth Radelet is actually a...   expand review  powerful mage and we're all quickly falling under her spell. If those releases weren't powerful enough, they go ahead and give us the NIGHT DRIVE SOUNDTRACK! Whether this is a real soundtrack to a movie is unclear, and frankly, I don't give a damn. Sure it would be awesome to see the beautiful Ruth Radelet starring in a film, but I'm just happy to hear more of her music. "Night Drive(1)" is the only track I've seen appear on another comp. That means 9 tracks of all new material! Sweet for you (and me -Ed.). Now you have tons of new music to make-out to. The cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill(2)" is an awesome slow burner especially good for the fireplace, while "Healer(3)" and "Tomorrow Is So Far Away(4)" brings the beat to the heat for that extra bump. The saucy synthwork with Ruth's poetic vocals is magically seductive and will have you demanding multiple listens. And just in case you're not in the mood for words, there's the instrumentals "I Want Your Love(5)" and "Let's Make This A Moment To Remember." Sounds like Smokey Robinson singles? Not quite, but they are smokey for sure. Highly Recommended. -C'mish

Sounds of the Cosmos
format: CD

lab price: $22.00
available: yes
item #: cd-2520

Been on a HUGE disco kick lately and this is perfect timing. The tastemakers are back with a brand new selection of cosmic disco tracks. Although it's called Cosmic Disco, I will admit it does stray off the wormhole a bit here...   expand review  and there. There are the rare disco heaters you would expect from the Idjuts, like BWO's insane "Stop" (which makes the whole mix worth it for me, I need a full copy of this!), Hot Chocolate's "Mindless Boogie," "Pacific Blue's "You Gotta Dance," but it also includes some new disco gems like Lindstrom's epic "Another Station" and the Todd Terje's funky work on "Eurodans." As a bonus, he also takes it there with awesome throwbacks like the Specials' "A Message To You Rudy," Stealers Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" (remember Resevoir Dogs) and BT Express' "Do It Till Your Satisfied." I don't know how spacey those are, but the familiarity is an appealing end note. -C'mish

The After Dark CDR was originally only available on Glass Candy's '07 west coast tour (only 100 pressed!). Due to popular demand (and the fact that this shit is REALLY REALLY good), the guys over at Italian's Do It Better repressed the...   expand review  joint and now you too can have a piece of this modern disco hotness. This isn't a mixtape either (though it kinda looks like one) - it actually contains full unreleased tracks and demo versions from soon-to-be-huge new disco/new italo artists Glass Candy, Mirage, Chromatics, Farah, and Professor Genius. Just check some of these sounds: The sweet and soulful disco grooves of Glass Candy with "Rolling Down The Hills(1)," their take on the Kraftwerk classic "Computer Love(2)," and Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway(3)," the bittersweet italo vibes of the Chromatics with "Hands In The Dark(4)" and "In The City(5)," and Mirage's spaced-out italo vocoder action on "Lady Operator(6)" and "Lake Of Dreams(7)," and the avant slow motion disco sickness that is Farah's "Dancing Girls(8)." 14 tracks total, no throw aways. Do not miss this if you are a fan of the disco-italo sound (you'll regret it - trust me). Recommended. -snackmaster

Saw this little gem floating around the promo bin a few month's back and had to snatch. As the title states, this is Dirty Space Disco... and yes, it is unmixed! The French trio of Guillaume Sorge, Clovis Goux, and Benjamin Morando...   expand review  are Dirty Sound System and they have taken the liberty of selecting these choice space disco cuts for you. These cats have definitely done their homework, and they bring you rare original tracks plus masterful edits that span various genres but all have a distinct space feel. Check the sounds - the falsetto love boat style of John Forde's "Atlantis(1)," the minimal haunting creeper "Die Drachentrommier (Pilooski Edit)(2)" by Clara Mondshine, funked out heaters like Undisputed Truth's "Undisputed (How & Why Edit)(3)" and Fern Kinney's "Baby Let Me Kiss You(4)," awesome italo fusion like Yello Power's "Hai Samurai(5)" (previously released on the now sold out 12" for this comp), and beautiful space disco soul like Odyssey's "Who(6)" and Sylvester's "I Need Somebody To Love Tonight(7)." Also got to mention Pilooski's brilliant edit of John Miles "Stranger In The City(8)." Extended breaks for days and it sounds sooooo good! Feeling the cosmic cut and paste artwork too. Definitely Recommended. -snackmaster

Damnit, most of my favorite cosmic disco artists I've been collecting are now available for you on one easy access compilation. Should I be mad? Sure. But in actuality, after listening to it, I guarantee you'll be mad for not owning the...   expand review  vinyl. It's that good. I remember getting Padded Cell's, "Konkorde Lafayette(1)" way back in late '06 and loving it. It was labeled as "Horror Disco" at the time and totally perked my ears to the sound. In Flagranti's "Nonplusultra - Black Devil Remix(2)" killed me during the re-revealing of Black Devil Disco this year and blew me away with his synth Italo mastery. Sorcerer's "Surfing At Midnight(3)" off Tirk Records was one of the first Balearic tracks we opened the Guggenheim with earlier this year and is still one of my favorites. For more heaters, listen to the ethereal sounds of Daniel Wang's "All Flowers Must Fade(4)," "Studio's slow burning syncopated jam, "Life's A Beach(5)," Black Mustang's awesome "Mad As Hell - Dub(6)" and Johan's Agebjorn's "Spacer Woman From Mars ft. Sally Shapiro(7)." So there's a couple I haven't heard, so I guess can't be that mad. Snackmaster asked me to mention how the Milky Disco font on the cover reminds him of the Milky Way, but from the dewdrops hidden in the layers, I'm thinking pure disco sex. Recommended (to find the vinyl versions). -C'mish
