I've never seen blogland so geniunely excited about a DVD release. Something about Bad Brains elicits a pure, gutteral response from music nerds and past generation skaters; and plus, no more shoddy bootleg VHS tapes from Bleeker Bobs or Kim's. This official...
expand review DVD captures the best of three Bad Brains perfomances that happened on 3 consecutive days in 1982, beginning on Christmas Eve. Bad Brains live proves to be worth the hype, with the thrash banshee HR singing like the devil's child and incredible intensity from the band. The footage is much better than I expected with multiple angles shot with professional cameras. CBGB's is well lit during the performance, allowing you to see in detail the '83 crowd sans security crew, as they freely wander the stage and go dumb. Awesome. 22 songs plus interviews. -mgmnt

Follow-up EP to Nobody's surprising Tree Colored See album. It was surprising at the time because Nobody had shifted almost fully into a folky psyche rock sound, rather than the downtempo sound of previous albums. After getting high praise for the effort,...
expand review this EP takes the sound even further there with a new edit of the summery "Broaden A New Sound(1)," plus three previously unreleased tracks. Postal Service producer Dntel is the perfect choice for the remix here, as he adds his tight, poppy style to "Feet Upon The Sand(2)." Devendra Banhart's "La Semilla(3)" sounds like a lush vocal number you'd find in the Greg Caz's crate, while "Long Lost(4)" is a female vocal number straight out of a Wes Anderson flick. -the mgmnt
OVERVIEW
Roland has now discontinued the classic SP-303 sampler (pick them up while we still have them!) and replaced it with the new SP-404. The 404 is built on the easy to use foundation of the SP-303, with a new casing, new features,...
expand review and expanded ranges for almost all existing features. The 404 should prove to have a similar acceptance to the SP-303 as the industry standard portable sampler and sequencer.
USES
- sample triggering during DJing
- sampling
- sequencing
- effects processing
NEW FEATURES
The SP-404 now has 12 large pads (the 303 had 8) for greater sample storage, more built-in effects, a new built in mic for easy vocal sampling on the fly, a Compactflash drive that now accepts cards up to 1GB, new metal casing, and more.
FEATURES
The SP-404 is recommended for 3 main uses. The first is for live performances, especially DJ sets where you can add sound effects and samples very easily. Now with the built-in mic, sample on the fly. The second use is for the effects. No matter what level producer you are, the 29 built-in effects are very useful especially the vinyl simulation mode. Many well-known producers used the SP-303's effects in their tracks. Lastly, the SP-404 is an easy to use sequencer. It is based on the same fundamentals as the MPC, and for sample-based music, sometimes simpler is better. This is what you get here, just think of it as portable sketchbook for beats (it even can run on batteries), also powerful enough to deliver a finished track (Madlib uses a SP-303 for some of his tracks).
OUR OPINION
The upgrades from the 303 make the 404 more producer friendly. The 303 became a cult classic because its ease of use. This is maintained in the 404; there's just more options and capacity. -the mgmnt

Last copies, this single is now out of print. Who knows if the SA-RA hype will ever result in something concrete (word is that they've been busy in their Hollywood studio), but there's no doubt that these guys have put an original...
expand review mark on the last couple years. Here's our original review that we wrote at early days of the SA-RA craze: SA-RA is a bi-coastal, 3-man production team who have somehow managed to blend the raw un-quantized feel of Jay Dee production with the freak appeal of Funkadelic for a sound that is entirely their own. If you missed some of their previous vinyl outings (Monch's "Agent Orange" and J5's "Yeah" among others), take notice now cause you will soon be hearing their work on joints from everyone from Dre to Common, N.E.R.D. and even a possible full length on Kanye West's label. The first taste, "Double Dutch(1)," plays alongside stuff from The Neptunes or Dipset just as comfortably as the most advanced offerings from MIA, Ciara or Bounty Killer. Flip the record for "Death of a Star(2)," a 120 bouncer that would make R. James take notice. Instrumentals for both tracks are included, but the vocals sung by SA-RA and one of their homegirls complete the package. This 12" borders on EP status by also including "SA-RA Space Theme(3)" which almost sounds like YNQ playing at Jabba's Cantina, and the off-beat/on-beat "Hanging By A String(4)." Ubiquity outdid themselves with the packaging on this one too (glossy full color insert on a 12"?), which means they must feel like I do- that this is some real significant shit. -jms
