You might already know this one from the success of Sean Paul's "Like Glue(1)" and TOK's "Money To Burn(2)" but it definitely warrants a riddim record with a string of big tunes and quality material produced by the legendary hit man Dave...   expand review  Kelly. Bud's "Tonight(3)" has been getting a lot of NYC radio play lately but my pick for the overlooked is Beenie's "Miss L.A.P(4)." Heard the Doctor got booed the hell off recently when he tried to spar with the big bad Bounty Killa in JA. Bottles thrown at him and the whole thing. Bounty- forever the people's champ. The "Put It On(5)" cover by Elan is surprisingly good. Also includes tunes from Spragga Benz & Twice(6), Tanto Metro & Devonte and others. 12 tracks total. -the mgmnt

DJ Explosion is one of the landmark mid-80s rhythm albums from the Techniques label, but before we get to the music here I gotta say that the cover artist Wilfred Limonious is a fucking genius. This is one of his best pieces,...   expand review  with his hilarious brand of cartooning and barely decipherable phrases taking up the entire front & back covers. When he gets the full sleeve to work with, Limonious is just out of control. A couple years ago, a european guy contacted me about doing a gallery show of Limonious and Jamaal Pete album covers (which would be amazing)- if you're out there, tell me what happened to that? All the tracks here run on Winston Riley's excellent version of the Things and Time rhythm, one that he cut almost as many artists on as his trademark Stalag. Super Cat's "Cry Fi Di Youth(1)" is probably the most famous track on this record, but everybody shines. Cutty Ranks comes through with the high powered "Fishman Lyrics(2)," in the same style as his later "Gunman Lyrics," cept he's talking about "them keepin a dance down in the water, when every fish a jump and dance togetha." I'm also feeling the early appearance by Johnny P on "Raggamuffin(3)" and the veteran U Brown in a classic style on "Papa Brown Train Taking Over(4)." You also get entertaining tracks from Charlie Chaplin, General Archie, two female chatters and more. I've got no problem listening to this record front to back, which is quite a rarity for a rhythm album. -the mgmnt

In modern dancehall music, all the songs are built off rhythms or riddims as they are really known. A producer/group come up with a riddim and then record as many tracks with singers and djs as they want. A lot of times...   expand review  the riddims are versions or updates of older riddims (sampling, covering and recycling are huge factors). This is a popular compilation of tracks on the Stalag riddim (rumored to be the base for over 200 songs). These tunes are built off the original Stalag under Techniques head Winston Riley's production. Big tunes include the world-huge "Ring The Alarm(1)" by the late great Tenor Saw, Lloyd Hemming's "Ragamufin Soldier(2)" and one of Yami Bolo's first big hits "When A Man in Love,(3)" which was later sampled by Mad Lion for the high pitched "why not take it easy" chorus. There's a few other big songs on here and the wicked original rhythm is also included. The cover of this record is worth it alone with the crazy Limonious cartoon characters and sayings. "Bubble under it Bredah Rat". If you are interested in riddims check out www.reggae-riddims.com and it's links. Good stuff. -the mgmnt

Late 80s rhythm record from the Techniques label, this is the one that launched Red Dragon's "Hole A Fresh(1)," and his cousin Fourgon's response tune "Build A Spliff(2)" (to the same melody). Other highlights include a nice & rare one from Courtney...   expand review  Melody called "Beautiful Woman(3)" and Sister Charmaine's "Granny's Advice(4)." Great minimalist cover from Limonious, and these also appear to be original pressings (slight age wear on the jackets, browning paper on the inside). Therefore snatch quickly, if snatching is so desired. 9 tracks total with others from Ansil Collins, Good Time, Admiral Tibbett and Cridland Collins. LAB IN DUB: page 3 of 14
