Lab Overview

First of the seven albums Tom Waits released on Elektra Asylum Records in the 1970s, Closing Time is an early look into the boozy storytelling that his songwriting would become to be known for in the years to come. Distinctly lyrical and blending the styles of jazz, blues, and folk, the time-honored debut includes enduring classics like "Ol'55" (covered by the Eagles), the heartwrenching "Martha" and the gentle acoustic folk of "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" on which Tom Waits sings "well, I hope that I don't fall in love with you / 'Cause falling in love just makes me blue." It's heartfelt but at the same time cynical, emotionally vibrant w/o being overly sentimental.
