Lab Overview

Incredible triple LP retrospective from that mythical record store on Myrtle Ave. Heads already know what it is, but for those unfamiliar, think of this as a necessary schooling. Founded in 2005 by Francis Englehardt and Paul Nickerson (aka Slow To Speak), Dope Jams gained a cult following for its masterfully curated selection, notorious parties, and their no bullshit/call-it-what-it-is attitude. More than just a retail store, Dope Jams acted as a hub for the underground - not only providing the sounds and parties, but also the community (and "magick"). No doubt people will reminisce about the spot on some "I was there" type shit. Dope Jams NYC Vol.1 - 2005-2012 highlights the sounds of that eight year era in Brooklyn (they've since relocated to the Catskills) with a compilation of classic anthems, defining tracks, and previously unreleased cuts on vinyl for the first time. If you ever went to a Dope Jams party, chances are you'll recognize some of these tunes from Vil-N-X, 2AM/FM, Tommy E, Groovestyle, Hieroglyphic Being and Funk D'Void, but also peep the unreleased gems from Spike, Beige and D'Marc Cantu. The tracks are spread across three LPs and sound phenomenal, but what really makes this comp special is it not only focuses on the music, but also the people that made Dope Jams what it is. The included 32-page booklet is loaded with extensive yearbook style notes on everything from the staff, friends, parties, and everything else (like the infamous 'rules' list) that made the place the stuff of legend. Recommended.
