Lab Overview

"You see, music is a great outlet. And regardless of what the titles say, and as close as I wanted it to be to William Blake, what was going on in my life took precedence." These are David Axelrod's own words about his 1969 masterpiece Songs Of Experience, the visionary producer's second album. Created after the death of his beloved son Scott, the album deals with heavy topics such as life and death, mortality and spirituality. This great, ominous energy is captured in majestic fashion, with lush arrangements that utilize a full Los Angeles orchestra over solid groundwork laid down by funk veterans the Wrecking Crew. The whole thing is an epic listening experience; one that has migrated through generations thanks to sampling (see "The Human Abstract" as used by DJ Shadow for "Midnight In A Perfect World" or the heavy "A Divine Image") - but you don't need to be a producer to appreciate this work of genius.

"There are very few people who see the Grand Picture of the Universe and understand the Nothingness that it all comes from. There are even fewer who can express these ideas through music – David could do it all." - T-Ray

This 2018 Now-Again reissue features audiophile-grade sound, laquered directly from Axelrod's original master tapes, and includes a 28-page booklet complete with never before published photos and an interview with Axelrod himself. Recommended.
