Lab Overview

1980’s Prom Night is one of the first “slasher” films, directed by Paul Lynch and starring Jamie Lee Curtis and (in much smaller type) Leslie Nielsen. The film was a massive success in the drive-in theatre era, brushing off pearl-clutching reviews and frequent comparisons to Halloween and Carrie. One point of divergence from its Carpenter-scored forebearers is its disco heavy soundtrack. Made in the last days of mainstream “Disco Fever” in North America, the film was shot with the actors dancing to tracks by the likes of Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, and Pat Benatar, but those tunes were far below the film’s budget. Under orders of the film’s producer, composer Paul Zaza wrote a series of disco songs over a mere few days, knocking off the tracks that were intended for use in the film. As you may expect, this lead to a heap of legal action, and resulted in the lack of a proper release of the music from this film in general. The disco songs are available on a variety of bootlegs, but the accompanying instrumental score by Zaza and Carl Zittrer has remained entirely unreleased until this year. This record is cut at 45RPM for improved bass response, and is pressed on “disco bloodbath” colored vinyl. This limited edition of 650 copies also includes a “tuxedo black” branded condom.
