But just as the mysterious letters that adorn the cover's skull, leaving behind the roaring fire, Grimes music is a foreign, fresh take on the aforementioned. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. It's a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, it's a highly infectious pop record once all's said and done. One both for the home listen (make your daily routine a good touch weirder) and for the clever DJ looking to work in the obscure. Exhibit A: the first 2 singles off the album \"Grindin\" and \"When the Last Time\" are just about the freshest thing to happen to hip-hop this year. By no means am I saying this is the best hip-hop album of the year, not by a mile; but it when it clicks it's pretty hard to deny a listen. The collaborations of \"I'm Not You\" featuring the Lox and Roscoe P. Coldchain, and \"Comedy Central\" featuring Fabolous are 2 of the stronger tracks presenting multiple angles over the moody Neptunes production. The multiple angles set the tone here, cause it seems the Clipse don't quite have the vocal charisma to sustain interest. But when they are paired with Pharell, Faith (\"Ma, I Don't Love Her\"), or any of the other collaborators, the formula completes itself. His dense productions seem to pair perfectly with Twigs' vocals. But it's exactly that seemingly fumbling, faux-artless delivery that lingers. The closest group I can liken them to is either \u003cstrong\u003eDepartment of Eagles\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003eYoung Marble Giants\u003c\/strong\u003e, but there's also the pop sheen of the \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.com\/search?q=Zombies+vinyl\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eZombies\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and the Let's Stay In Bed Forever quality of \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.com\/search?q=My+Bloody+Valentine\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMy Bloody Valentine\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. Tracks like \"I Found The F,\" \"Black Cat,\" \"Tender Buttons,\" \"America's Boy\" and \"Goodbye Girls\" may entice you, and I'm calling \"Tears In The Typing Pool\" as my favorite, but the album really stands on its cohesiveness, which requires a beginning-to-end listening. When Del is not holding down the mic, Albarn lends his voice to this slutty crossbreed of beats and brit-pop. It works well in places like beat-centric \"Tomorrow Comes Today\" or the Kid Koala skratch workout \"Sound Check.\" In other places you'll really have to like Albarn's presence to get with it. The instrumental tracks that make up about a quarter of the album are a departure from Automator's past projects. That being said, there are still some really addictive songs amongst the ten here. \"Human After All\" opens things up in familiar territory with the vocoders, big stadium drums and what not, while \"Television Rules The Nation\" rocks slow and steady at under 115bpm. The album's most satisfying moments come from the more intimate songs like \"Make Love\" and \"Emotion\" though, soft touch production that feels a little like Air (in the best possible way). You could almost miss it, glance over the brilliance thinking it's just more music for that cousin of yours that carved his girlfriend's name in his arm at Thanksgiving. Give \"Touched\" a listen to get an idea of the incredible harmonics that these guys managed to pull. It reminds me of those flexible National Geographic records you used to get, the sound of whales fucking or something. Every single song is a standout here especially \"I Only Said\" and \"Soon.\" \"Blown a Wish\" is a great example of more typical shoegaze ish.
