Lab Overview

It was almost 20 years ago that Jeff McIlwain aka Lusine first shared his productions w/ the world, and Sensorimotor, his latest on Ghostly International, still contains strains of IDM, ambient, and downtempo that the Seattle-by-way-of-Texas producer so expertly dwelled in. This release, however, takes more of an "introspective turn" as the title suggests, and emotion and soul fill out the fluid arrangement of sounds (creating with an MPC1000, a borrowed Prophet 5, hand percussion, glockenspiel, field recordings, and samples of live instruments) that effortlessly flow from techno, electro-pop, and experimental. Check out the pulsing bass and lustrous synth work of "Just a Cloud" w/ vocals from Vilja Larjosto, or the more upbeat melodic shuffle of "Won't Forget" also with an assist from the singer. Other highlights include "Ticking Hands," "Flyaway," "Witness," "The Level," and the lovely opener, "Canopy." This is the limited-edition grey / black marble vinyl version of the album, 800 copies only w/ downloads included.
