Records\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003ci\u003eEnergy\u003c\/i\u003e was one of the first albums to successfully mix hardcore punk with a healthy dose of ska. Operation Ivy basically set the blueprint for every band that was to follow in their footsteps. It's all there, from the opening of \"Knowledge\" all the way to the end of \"Missionary.\" The sound definitely leans more towards the hardcore side, but the heavy skank on \"Soundsystem\" and \"Take Warning\" set Op Ivy apart from the traditional punk sound. \u003ci\u003eEnergy\u003c\/i\u003e has gone on to have a huge influence on contemporary punk rock despite Op Ivy breaking up 2 months after the album's release. Lint (Tim Armstrong) and Matt Freeman (credited as Matt McCall) would go on to form \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.com\/search?q=Rancid\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRancid\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and the rest is punk rock history. Throughout all of this the vocals of \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.com\/search?q=MC+Ride\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMC Ride\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e come screaming out of the ether. His technique could be called rapping in the most abstract of senses. It's non sequitur but somehow you're able to derive some meaning from Ride's delivery. They took in early influences as well, turning to \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.com\/search?q=Black+Sabbath\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBlack Sabbath\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, the \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.com\/search?q=MC5\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMC5\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, and the \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.com\/search?q=Stooges\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eStooges\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e for new approaches to their own music. The resulting music was march darker than the humor filled anthems of \u003ci\u003eDamaged\u003c\/i\u003e. The snot nosed punk approach of early recordings was done away with in favor of a new focus on gloom, depression, defeatism, and aggression. The first half of the record contains the high-powered hardcore punk that the band had become known for. It closes with the freak out of \"The Swinging Man\" but leaves no clue as to what is to come on the B side. \"Nothing Left Inside\" reveals the sludge metal sound that the band had been exploring. It's a fitting introduction to the three tracks that make up the second half of the album. There is plenty of self hate wallowing in the slower tempos and extended takes. Needless to say, \u003ci\u003eMy War\u003c\/i\u003e was a polarizing album for Black Flag fans. There's also a decent cover of \u003cstrong\u003eA-Ha\u003c\/strong\u003e's \"Take On Me,\" which kinda gets buried in the overall greatness. \u003cstrong\u003eCap'n Jazz\u003c\/strong\u003e only released one album and a handful of EPs in the 90s.
