One of the more intriguing skull designs I've seen over the last few years, wearing a blooming crown and emerging from flames is bordered by a milieu of foreign languages. Now, thinking about the music, I'm starting to gather that the confusing image is altogether appropriate. Claire Boucher, Grimes, comes from today's new school of electronic, dream pop, a school owing equal parts to Madonna, Bjork, and Aphex Twin's ambient works. But just as the mysterious letters that adorn the cover's skull, leaving behind the roaring fire, Grimes music is a foreign, fresh take on the aforementioned. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. It's a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, it's a highly infectious pop record once all's said and done. One both for the home listen (make your daily routine a good touch weirder) and for the clever DJ looking to work in the obscure. Highlights include the sure-classics "Genesis," "Circumambient," "Be a Body," and "Nightmusic," all prime for a space station's dance floor, the crowd looking back through the window at how distant other music seems.

black vinyl pressing

printed inner sleeve

music label: 4AD 2012

reviewed by A. Some of that is due to Parker and co-producer Dave Fridmann's work behind the boards. They creatively employ plenty of effects, as well as play with the arrangements the way someone making electronic music would, not rock. The drums are given plenty of space while vocals are layered on top of each other. Parker channels a bit of Lennon with his voice, its hazy intonation pulling you gently into the fold. It seems that Tame Impala are intent on enveloping you with their sound. Heavily phased synths lead the way for Farfisa organs and clouds of tape echo to invade your ears. If you've been swimming in chill waves perhaps you should take a few steps to the left and indulge in some Tame Impala. We thought we would bring it back to the lab to show you the greatness that is Tame Impala. Just as the cosmic journey that 2012's Lonerism took us on, consider this the surf mission that leads to the enlightened world we will eventually fully embrace. With David Fridmann of Flaming Lips fame helping on the final album mix, Parker achieved the explosive sound he was looking for. This album sent shockwaves through the music world and changed the face of punk music forever. Never before had punk infiltrated so far into the mainstream consciousness. Back in '94 Green Day were just 3 crusty friends in California trying to churn out their own brand of brash and youthful music. “Basket Case” is damn near perfect song that shows the brand of catchy, melodic and accessible punk that turned Green Day into superstars. “When I Come Around” is another timeless hit that was also used by my sister and I to soundtrack what is surely the finest homemade music video of all time. Other selections like “Longview”, “She” and “Having A Blast” help round out this classic album. If there were a Criterion Collection for albums this one would easily make the cut. Blink 182, New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World – every punk-orientated band that found mainstream success in the late 90’s and early 00’s can link their success back to Green Day and specifically the Dookie bomb that blew us all out of the water.

180g black vinyl pressing

original release year: 1994

music label: Reprise Records 2009

reviewed by boumtje-boumtje 08/2014
.

Jeff Buckley's Grace has won the admiration of many musicians over the years. Released in 1994, some of rock's greats including Bob Dylan and David Bowie, have expressed their appreciation for Buckley's music. And then there's "Knock Me Down" with its introspective lyrics reflecting on the death of former Peppers' guitarist Hillel Slovak and the effects of drug addiction. I mean, even "Pretty Little Ditty" was awesome. There was not a wrong note that Flea, Frusciante, Kiedis or Smith could play. If you're like me I'm sure you can relate. It's astounding to see what went into the record and what the band had been through prior to recording it. From losing Slovak and the subsequent departure of drummer Jack Irons to adding guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith the Pepper's were in the midst of a transformation. Mother's Milk would go on to be the record that took them from being a punky funk band that sang about sex and drugs to a band that was ready to get into deeper subject matter backed by a more diverse musical pallet. A while back (around 2007), Justin Vernon was visiting the HQ and he fell in love with Emma. Then Emma broke his heart. So Justin went up to a cabin in the woods of Wisconsin and wrote a beautiful folk album about the love, loss and longing that he felt after his time with Emma. Okay, so this album might not actually be about our in-house pup, but it was written in a far away cabin and holds all of the heartache and guilt one might expect from a sequestered man. This was Vernon’s debut release as Bon Iver and helped put him on the road to indie/folk stardom. The lo-fi and gritty quality to the recordings mixes wonderfully with the heartbreaking lyrics to create tangible and thick mood for the entirety of the album. “Skinny Love” and “For Emma” are the easy standouts on the record. “Flume” opens the album on a very subdued note and “The Wolves” carries along a similar somber atmosphere. His sophomore album would take on a more refined sound and next thing you know – boom – Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album of 2012. Isn’t success just the easiest? Vernon took a more collaborative approach to his second album, enlisting help from a range of talented musicians. The scale and scope of Vernon’s productions might have upgraded but his voice, the anchoring force for all his work, is as warm and personal as ever. “Halocene” is a great example of how his voice and diction are themselves an instrument. Tracks like “Hinnom, TX” and “Minnesota, WI” show the reach with which Vernon can take his music with added production value while keeping the somber mood he so expertly exudes. The open flows and opens up over time, bringing you deeper and deeper into Vernon’s psyche and ends with the atmospheric adventure “Beth/Rest” that (out of context) sounds miles apart from his last album.
