There are remnants of the icey 808 riddims and metallic guitars that defined \u003cem\u003eGarlands\u003c\/em\u003e, but this, the follow up, sees the original trio pared down to a pair, and the romantic relationship between \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Robin+Guthrie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRobin Guthrie\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=elizabeth+Fraser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLiz Fraser\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e in full bloom (hence the title), and so the cold nihilism that haunted their debut is swapped out for tender balladry and romantic reverie. You can just picture Rob \u0026amp; Liz locked in a lovedrunk gaze from across the studio whilst laying down these tracks. “Sugar Hiccup” is the big swirling ballad here, and “The Tinderbox (Of A Heart),” “When Mama Was Moth,” “Musette And Drums” and “Multifoiled” are great locked-inside-your-room-on-a-rainy-day jams. Over the next 11 tracks, she delivers stirring hymns buried in ripples of acoustic guitar; each track slowly cascading into the next with cottony atmosphere for days. It’s as if some timid creature has descended from the woods and is playing gorgeous alien songs around your campfire, and you’re too captivated by her beauty to tell her to get lost. Harris’ subsequent projects have played with the formula a bit, adding and subtracting layers; inviting the listener in close before pulling away again. But \u003cem\u003eDragging\u003c\/em\u003e is the most sublime overall experience, with the sheer beauty of songs like “Fishing Bird (Empty Gutted In The Evening Breeze),” “Heavy Water \/ I’d Rather Be Sleeping,” “Invisible” and “We’ve All Gone To Sleep” subjected to varying levels of saturation and echo making for an intoxicating listen. Her lyrics are still pretty much indecipherable, something we’ve come to accept over a painful decade of trying to extract meaning from her work (although she was kind enough to include the lyrics to “Birthday Song” here). “Once a song has left me I want it to belong to whoever finds it. I write a song about feeling isolated. Listeners know the song is about their mother dying, the birth of their child, the way their last relationship ended. All these things and more. Side 1 opener “Made In Hong Kong” starts the session off with what sounds like scanning a post-nuclear AM dial in search of the perfect tune, before settling into the title track, and the understated lead that winds it down will haunt you and keep you buzzing for weeks. “Shisheido,” “A Year In A Minute” and “Caecilia” offer similarly charming hooks.
