The Afrobeat pioneer was known for his bravery in confrontations with politicians and senior police or army officers. He was busted in 1974 when police raiding his home saw him swallow a joint. A succession of officers and goons tried to get him to fess up to no avail. Eventually he ended up in front of the head of Nigerian Interpol, who told him "I'm going to talk to you in my office...." "You get office?" Kuti asked sarcastically. "You foolish stupid bastard! You low-down sonofabitch, you dog, you goat, you....." Fela would spend the next threes days in jail while the authorities waited for him to produce an incriminating sample. He and his cellmates would swap waste buckets and the police were forced to let him go without any evidence. The track itself is a tough piece of Aforbeat that features extended solo from trumpeter Tunde Williams. On the flip is a cut that is worthy of a 12" on it's own. "Water No Get Enemy" is slower in pace but no less powerful. Fela is front and center with his trademark tenor sax and the rhythm section is tight as ever. He compares its soldiers to living dead who blindly follow orders - and the baiting call-and-response chorus of "zombie, yo zombie!" is musically compelling as well as being pure dancefloor fire. Vinyl 3LP

First time properly reissued material from African Synth Funk pioneer William Onyeabor. Quite the man of mystery, Onyeabor's music has been heard throughout the years and dug up by some of the diggers elite, but no one until now has been able to legitimately reissue his work. David Byrne's Luaka Bop label has uncovered some of the world's finest music from Brazil to Cuba to France. Their 3rd volume in the "World Psychedelic Classics" series was a major hit with music critics and was just an introduction of what was to come. Who Is William Onyeabor takes us on a walk through what one could only imagine an African Discoteque could sound like, and it takes a lot of imagination to dream up this stuff. Yes the inherent polyrhythms are present, but the outer world synth workouts and straight up Disco tinged bangers are spread throughout. Over the years getting attention from the likes of Caribou and Four Tet, this is music that was made 30 + years ago but sounds like it was made for 10 years from now. Who is William Onyeabor? A genius that is finally getting his time. These are songs of wisdom, loss, mourning, and exile, sung directly into a boombox and accompanied by Emahoy’s unmistakable piano. Though written and recorded while still living at her family’s home in Addis Ababa, Emahoy sings of the heartache of leaving her beloved Ethiopia, a reflection on the 1974 revolution and ensuing Red Terror in her homeland, and a presentiment of her future exile in Jerusalem. In the 21st century, Emahoy has become known worldwide for her utterly unique melodic and rhythmic style. Commonly misinterpreted as 'jazzy' or 'honky tonk,' Emahoy’s music actually comes from a deep engagement with the Western classical tradition, mixed with her background in Ethiopian traditional and Orthodox music. These songs, recorded between 1977-1985, are different from anything previously released by the artist. Rich with the sound of birds outside the window, the creak of the piano bench, the thump of Emahoy’s finger on the record button, they create a sense of place, of being near the artist while she records. Emahoy dreamt of releasing this music to a larger audience before her passing in March of 2023.
