Lab Overview

Detroit stand up! The rich musical heritage of the Motor City is represented once again on the latest from hip-hop prodigy Black Milk and his band Nat Turner. On The Rebellion Sessions, the group (consisting of Black Milk alongside Aaron “Ab” Abernathy on keys, Malik Hunter on bass, and Zebulun “Z” Horton on drums) deliver a fully realized jazz funk odyssey in the form of ten live instrumentals. It is an impressive affair to say the least, with the quartet channeling the energies of visionaries like Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus, and Sly Stone, as well as contemporaries such as D'Angelo and Robert Glasper. That may seem like an overstatement, but it's not really. Checkout the title track, "Never,"  "Burn," "Electric Spanking," or "Traveler." The sound should speak for itself. Recommended.
