Lab Overview

Largely improvised live performance from Terry Riley. Descending Moonshine Dervishes was originally recorded in 1975 at a concert in Berlin and released in 1982. Riley used a modified Yamaha organ with variable resistors to facilitate tuning in just intonation and a tape delay for the 53 minute long piece. Split over two sides of vinyl, the recording features Eastern inspired melodies, spiraling rhythms and mesmerizing repetitions that create intricate, shifting layers of sound. It's mesmerizing and addictive, and helps to illustrate why so many musicians have looked to Riley for inspiration over the years. Released by Beacon Sound on black vinyl housed in a reproduction of the original sleeve. Recommended.
