Lab Overview

In recent years we’ve seen gorgeous reissues of full-length Brazilian boogie jewels by Marcos Valle, Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti in addition to tastefully-curated comps by Music From Memory, Cultures Of Soul, Favorite Recordings & Atemoya Records. Brazil, home to some of the greatest songwriters and composers of the 20th century, is naturally a treasure trove of this stuff, as many artists working in the spheres of bossa nova, tropicália and Música Popular Brasileira caught the bug and began churning out slabs of synth-infused electrofunk in the late 70s. This collection surveys slightly less-obvious material, collecting acetates, deadstock & promo 45s by total no-names like Tony Blue, Elizio De Buzios, Let’s Dance, Gaby Do Whiskadão, Newton Drinckwater and more, in addition to rarities by fairly well-known acts Cassiano, Tony Bizarro & Tim Maia. These tracks cover the whole boogie spectrum, from slick jazz-funk (“Macaco Pesado (Melô do Macaco),” “Velho Guerreiro”) to proto-hip-hop (check out the ill scratching on Electric Boogies’ “Break Mandrake”). As many unheard and unplayed records sit idly buried in Brazilian charity shops, moldy basements and junkyards as we speak, the stream of unearthed gems seems to never end. Keep them coming…
