I'm not quite sure there's anything else quite like it. Even though I've gotten tired of the aging cult of Beastie, I still put this on when I want to get hyped up for heated recreational sports sessions (that's right chall!). Whoooo!\"), and the band is tighter than ever.  But in the midst of all that fire, the entire album kind of has a meloncholy tone running through it, as seen from the hangman on the cover.  Check the title track,\"Game Theory, \"Don't Feel  Right\", and \"In The Music\" for a lesson on how to start your LP.  Three heaters in a row with every song flowing into the next one, so smooth.  From the energy of \"Here I Come\", to the slowed down cruise of JDavey on \"Atonement\" the whole album is more like listening of a concise movement than a ,\"listen to this track, skip that track\" album. Check the drums on \"Breathe,\" the kicks and hand claps are liberated from standard beat measures. \"Camel\" creates movement we're not used to in a beat track; you can tell there's something else going on here. \"Comet Course\" shows the complete package in an uptempo flurry stew. \"GNG BNG\" is so fresh sounding, I can just picture Gaslamp playing this and doing his patented possessed behind-the-decks dance. In a play of depth, Flylo enlists several vocalist for the last third of the album including songstress Dolly on \"RobertaFlack\" and Gaslamp's partner Gonja Sufi on \"Testament.\" 17 tracks overall, it lives up to the hype. If you follow non-commercial hip-hop in any capacity, you are no doubt familiar with the extensive list of artists that these two have worked with, and you know what these two cats are capable of. Accordingly, this project was so hyped that an earlier version that was leaked on the internet was completely shelved and reworked, this version is completely different than any advance tracks you may have heard. Does it live up to the hype? Of course not, but that doesn't prevent \u003cem\u003eChampion Sound\u003c\/em\u003e from being a pretty damned good, if occasionally inconsistent album. Madlib and Jay split reverse production and MCing duties on every other track; and while we're obviously checking this album more for the beats than the rhymes (there's a few moments here that make Pete Rock sound like Rakim), Jay Dee brings adequate lyrical heat \u0026amp; flow on bangers like \"McNasty Filth\" feat. Detroit homey \u003cstrong\u003eFrank-N-Dank\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the first single \"The Red.\" With that track's sick bumping analog-fart bassline, you'd only notice the words if they got in the way, and they don't. Neither of the pair break any new ground stylistically and I don't think that we'd want them to anyways; Madlib shows his sampling chops on \"The Official,\" nicely utilizing a different chunk of the same Gap Mangione joint that Jay Dee used for Slum Village's \"Fall In Love.\" And there's other treats here too. \"The Exclusive\" lets criminally underrated guest MC Percee P shine, the Jay Dee produced \"Stars\" amply demonstrates his knack for integrating samples with a more electronic, keyboard-based sound, and \"No Games\" is just a straight-up nasty beat, funky analog synths and shuffling drums showcasing Madlib at the top his game. \u003cem\u003eChampion Sound\u003c\/em\u003e's not gonna blow you away, but there's more than enough to chew on here. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. It's a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, it's a highly infectious pop record once all's said and done. Nostalgic as the sound of their compositions was, their once innocent sounding warbling synths were now imbued with a mischievous spirit. Further more they filled in the silent spaces with more ominous drone. This all tended to create a slightly more malicious atmosphere. Overall \u003ci\u003eGeogaddi\u003c\/i\u003e was a satisfying release, especially for how hotly anticipated it was. Warp has done a great service to all those BOC fans that missed out on the vinyl when it initially came out in offering this reissue.
