Whoooo!"), and the band is tighter than ever. But in the midst of all that fire, the entire album kind of has a meloncholy tone running through it, as seen from the hangman on the cover. Check the title track,"Game Theory, "Don't Feel Right", and "In The Music" for a lesson on how to start your LP. Three heaters in a row with every song flowing into the next one, so smooth. From the energy of "Here I Come", to the slowed down cruise of JDavey on "Atonement" the whole album is more like listening of a concise movement than a ,"listen to this track, skip that track" album. Of course ?uestlove is overseeing all the mixes and direction, so you know the shit is going to be flawless. Nice touch on the record insert: all lyrics included. Haven't seen that since tapes.

music label: Def Jam / 2006

reviewed by C'mish 09/2006

We're living in the 21st century, and Kanye West is definitely doing something to it. From media frenzies to Twitter rants, the Chicagoan has permanently taken residence in our lives, and most of the time, we don't mind because as a rapper, producer - an artist - he delivers. You've heard the story, how he set up camp in Hawaii and flew in hip-hop's creme de la creme - as well as indie rock and pop names plus Elton John! - to work on new material. And as soon as the first G.O.O.D. Friday tune dropped, we knew My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was going to be special, and after a few listens, the album far surpasses expectations and is no doubt one of Kanye's finest offerings. "Dark Fantasy," "So Appalled," and "Blame Game," "Gorgeous," and "Hello Of A Life" are creative, meticulous, and genius pieces of work that swiftly move us past West's non-musical shortcomings. Then come "Power," "All Of The Lights," "Devil In A New Dress,""Monster," and "Runaway ," which underscore (again) Kanye's mastery of composing songs that don't sacrifice quality for mass appeal. Then when you finally do buy the classic record, you find that it makes your life just that much better. For all you MTV youngins, this album is from the good ole' days when Mr. B-Real, Sen-Dog and Muggs were keepin it solid like Ashford And Simpson. So powerful, it made white-boys think that they looked cool in afros... So powerful, it caused teary-eyed inter-preppie rumbles over the ethics of inhaling weed smoke at my high school... So powerful, B-Real scored Electra. Anyway you look at it, his words have affected the lives of many, and here he is in the new decade of the new millennium, reaching out to a whole new generation of people with a brand new album. Plenty of artists go to retirement and come back, but Gil Scott-Heron has really impressed with I'm New Here. His scuffed and often tired voice tells of the hardships he has dealt with over the many years in a soulful bluesy manner - sounding so experienced, yet fresh over the minimalist modern beats and soundscapes. Can't really pick and choose tracks here - this is the type of album you have to enjoy as a whole, but if you want a couple standalone highlights check out "New York Is Killing Me," "I'll Take Care Of You," or "Me And The Devil." Powerful stuff. One of the more intriguing skull designs I've seen over the last few years, wearing a blooming crown and emerging from flames is bordered by a milieu of foreign languages. Now, thinking about the music, I'm starting to gather that the confusing image is altogether appropriate. Claire Boucher, Grimes, comes from today's new school of electronic, dream pop, a school owing equal parts to Madonna, Bjork, and Aphex Twin's ambient works. But just as the mysterious letters that adorn the cover's skull, leaving behind the roaring fire, Grimes music is a foreign, fresh take on the aforementioned. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. It's a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, it's a highly infectious pop record once all's said and done. One both for the home listen (make your daily routine a good touch weirder) and for the clever DJ looking to work in the obscure. Highlights include the sure-classics "Genesis," "Circumambient," "Be a Body," and "Nightmusic," all prime for a space station's dance floor, the crowd looking back through the window at how distant other music seems.

black vinyl pressing

printed inner sleeve

music label: 4AD 2012

reviewed by A. Sorry, haters - with Switch, Diplo, Blaqstarr and Timbaland behind the boards, there was basically no way Ms. Arul was gonna catch a sophomore slump. London's Switch (aka Dave Taylor) is just about the biggest dance producer / remixer and one half of Major Lazer, so his style mixed with M.I.A.'s jumble of influences makes for some seriously unique "pop" music. Totally wasn't expecting the Bolly-disco sound on "Jimmy," or the flat-out weirdness of "Bird Flu" and lead single "Boyz." (M.I.A. also seems to have picked up a fondness for regurgitating lyrics, spitting up some gems from the Modern Lovers and Pixies on various tracks.) Switch's production makes up the bulk of the album, but some real gems come when Maya branches out. "Mango Pickle Down River" is virtually just a remix of Aboroginal kiddie rappers Wilcannia Mob's "Down River," but with a song that fucking awesome to start, it doesn't matter much. Blaqstarr brings his trademark minimal spookiness to "The Turn," and the M.I.A. / Switch / Diplo power trio really tears it up on the Bmore-ish "XR2." Timbaland left his collab with M.I.A., "Come Around," off his solo album - dunno why, it's pretty hot and his album was shit anyway. His influential Brainfeeder label is constantly pushing boundaries with eclectic, forward-thinking releases that shape and mold the scene, while his own work continues to evolve and grow exponentially. Now with Until The Quiet Comes, his fourth full length album, Flying Lotus delivers his most realized and coherent piece to date. Whereas Cosmogramma took us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy and beyond, Until The Quiet Comes brings us back to earth with a very personal and introspective sound rooted in cosmic jazz as much as it is in beats. From the opening notes of "All In," you can already tell you are in for something special. Lush arrangements and free flowing melodies seem to come natural for Flylo with nothing ever seeming rushed or forced ("Until The Colours Come, "Only If You Wanna"). Then come the heavy bump of the beats that work as a perfect counter balance to the mystic jazz vibes ("Until The Quiet Comes," "Getting There," "The Nightcaller," "Tiny Tortures"). Of course Flying Lotus also gets a little help from his friends to fully realize this cosmic vision. Check the A-list guest appearances from Erykah Badu on "See Thru To U," Thom Yorke on "Electric Candyman," as well as Thundercat on "DMT Song," and Laura Darlington on "Phantasm." 18 tracks in all housed in brilliant cover art with free download card included. Some of that is due to Parker and co-producer Dave Fridmann's work behind the boards. They creatively employ plenty of effects, as well as play with the arrangements the way someone making electronic music would, not rock. The drums are given plenty of space while vocals are layered on top of each other. Parker channels a bit of Lennon with his voice, its hazy intonation pulling you gently into the fold. Led by multi-instrumentalist Thomas Brenneck, Menahan features musicians from Daptone's Budos Band and Sharon Jones backers the Dap-Kings, as well as Leon Michels of El Michels Affair... yet Make The Road By Walking possesses its own style and soul that doesn't quite fall in line with any of those groups. You know the opening title track from Jay-Z's "Roc Boys" (Mr. Carter tagged it "black super hero music"), and you'll recognize the Bill Conti-penned closer "Going The Distance" as soon as those horns blare, but sandwiched in between are eight great instrumental cuts that never stagnate or overstay their welcome. (The album zips by, with almost no tracks clocking in at over 3 1/2 minutes.) Brenneck says that practicing in his Bushwick bedroom has made the group the unofficial house band of his street, and you can feel why on tunes like "Home Again!" and the prickly "The Traitor." (On the other side of that, the swaying 'Karina" and shuffling "Birds" may take one elsewhere.) Simply put, MSB brims with the kind of soul we could all use more of nowadays. And: watch out for the hidden track. 11 tracks; 36 minutes. The only odd thing about that is he is from New York. This being his major label debut and him moving to LA doesn't change the dark, brooding sound that producer Clams Casino helped him champion just a year ago. Carrying most of the album on his shoulders, you can't have a rap album without guests. Santigold, A$AP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, 2Chainz, Drake, even Skrillex dropped in. Stand out tracks include the Hit Boy produced 'Goldie', title track 'Long.Live.A$AP' is ridiculously banging, posse rap cut 'F*cking Problems', + the Skrillex co-produced 'Wild For The Night' is dubsteppy... but we can easily overlook that for Rocky. Add in Madlib's increasingly adept rhymes (yeah I said it) that flip dizzyingly back and forth in pitch from Quas helium to white-guy squeak to standard drawl, plus subject matter that references magic mushrooms as well as la yerba buena (Greenery), and you have a thoroughly psychedelic experience. I mean, the guy used Frank Zappa graphics on the cover and even has a song named after the Beatles' heaviest ode to acid ("Tomorrow Never Knows"). Of course, the main ingredient in this stew is the man's vast record collection, and for the beat diggers out there it's scrunched-face bobblehead time from the get. The requisite vinyl tribute is suitably sizzling ("Raw Addict Pt.2"), but each cut smacks unimaginative beatmakers silly with twisted drums ("1994"), loops to spare ("Raw Deal") and awkward/awesome chops ("Players of the Game"). I said it before, and I'll say it again: Lib might not have the smoothest flow on the mic, but he comes with consistently clever lyrics and precise metaphors that suit his beats impeccably . And did you see the video for "Rappcats"? It matches the tongue-twisting hip hop retrospective frame for frame. This time around, now that he's been picked up by True Panther, he's got the help of producer Rodaidh McDonald.
