On and on and on and on... Mz. Badu's stunning debut album from '97 on wax! Baduizm is one of those albums that that still gets on regular rotation here in the Lab office almost 20 years after its initial release. Erykah melded the vocal inflections of Jazz greats like Billie Holiday with the classic soul sensibilities of 1970's heavyweights like Roberta Flack and Donnie Hathaway and the unmistakable flow of the hip-hop MC, all of which was evident on "On And On". Sung/rhymed verses like "I go on & on and on & on /My cipher keeps movin' like a rollin' stone" especially reveal her as the hip-hop baby that she is, and it's that hip-hop influence in combination with the classic soul sound and consciousness that would coalesce under the Neo Soul banner (for better or worse). Includes "Appletree," "4 Leaf Clover," "Next Lifetime," "Sometimes" and "Certainly." Like a fine wine, this one just gets better with time.
