“Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah…” Lil Uzi Vert became a household name after his decidedly bizarre verse on “Bad & Boujee”, but we’ve been following the Philly mumble-crooner since he dropped this breakout album (mixtape?) last year and Hot97 DJs started begrugingly slipping “P’s & Q’s” into their afternoon playlists. Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World is somewhat of a love letter to on-again, off-again girlfriend Brittany Byrd. Uzi compares their partnership to classic tween love stories from Pokemon (“Team Rocket”) and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (“Scott And Ramona”). Uzi exists in a musical climate built by Fetty Wap, Future and Chief Keef, and his triplicate mumbled crooning on “Grab The Wheel” and “Scott And Ramona” showcase his uncanny melodic capabilities, distilling the formula laid out by his predecessors. After the massive success of Lil Yachty’s Lil Boat colored vinyl pressing for RSD Black Friday 2016, it seems the majors are slowly getting back into the habit of hip-hop full-length vinyl releases after abandoning the format when club DJs switched to Serato en masse. Now on marbled purple colored vinyl (so you can stop sneaking an ipod into your DJ night just to play “Money Longer”) with printed insert and individually numbered sleeve, limited to 2500 copies. Recommended.
