One Life Stand CD

melodic synth pop from the hipster dance favorites

Fourth LP from hipster dance stalwarts Hot Chip. One Night Stand sees their sound turn towards synth pop, with the focus of most songs on melody and vibe, rather than blazing hot beatz. "Thieves In The Night(1)," "Brothers(2)," "Keep Quiet(3)" and "Alley Cats(4) are all great examples of this. Don't get it twisted though, the album does feature dance tracks as well, like the title track(5), "Hand Me Down Your Love(6)," and "We Have Love(7)." It's an excellent album, a mixture of the R&B sounds featured on their first album and the heavy dance music that came on the two LPs that followed. 10 tracks total, recommended.

Universal Horizons / The Amulet 12"

deep cosmic balearic grooves from LA, pick

Excellent debut release from Los Angeles-based balearic band Pacific Horizons. Deep cosmic grooves are on the menu for this 12" complete with epic guitar solos, dubbed-out synths, subtle psychedelics and a steady swaying balearic tempo (not too fast, not too slow). Both sides, "The Amulet(1)" and "Universal Horizons(2)," are equally impressive. Fans of Cosmic Baleaeric Beats, Milky Disco, Lo Recordings, DJ Harvey, Todd Terje, and chilling on the beach need to check this. A very limited self-released type deal, so act fast - hand silkscreened, hand numbered edition of 200! Recommended.

I know all y'all have cut with Superseal before. But have you cut with Superseal...in 3D? No? Well now you can with the latest scratch innovation form the fertile mind of DJ Qbert. Not only does it come with a pair of 3D glasses, it's packaged in a sleeve with 3D artwork, and the labels feature 3D art to bug your eyes out while you tear it up. Wow! But enough about the 3D gimmicks, in all seriousness Superseal was one of THE most useful, well balanced break records ever - a staple in the bag if you're a turntablist. This version features the same formula and layout but with new skipless scratch sentences and a sick new scratch beat to rip to.

Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration of Fela Kuti Box Set 4x10"

covers and music inspired by the godfather of afro-beat

It's pretty common knowledge that Fela Kuti created afro-beat. His influence on not only that genre, but untold others is undeniable. This collection of Fela covers (approved by his estate) and Fela-inspired songs has been lovingly compiled by Egon and released by Now Again, who really know how to do it up when it comes to compilations. To wit: This box set contains four 10" records, as well as a large-format booklet that's filled with stories, liner notes and never-before-seen photos of Fela Kuti. This is an excellent celebration of not only Fela and his music, but the music he inspired in others. Recommended.

Dancehall 2: The Rise of Jamaican Dancehall Culture 2CD

excellent reggae collection for intermediate to advanced collector

With their first Dancehall compilation, Soul Jazz had to include many obligatory, consensus selections (ie. "Murder She Wrote") to set the stage. Don't get me wrong, it was still one of the best dancehall comps ever. With the second volume, Soul Jazz has hit their true stride, stretching deeper into the genre for a selection that will have all the 7" collectors, spliff-heads and trustafarians buzzing (selections by Blood & Fire founder Steve Barrow). Double disc featuring 24 unmixed tracks, fold-out packaging, a liner notes booklet. Recommended.

Limited vinyl version! Madlib is ready to take 2010 by storm. The blunted beat monster has promised to drop 12(!) CDs this year, one every month for the ENTIRE YEAR on his own Madlib Invazion imprint. Talk about a tall order, but if anyone can deliver on something as crazy as this it would be Madlib! This is the first of the one-a-month, 12 CD series (odd numbers in the series are original albums, even numbers are mixtapes), and features Madlib droppin' his signature rough and rugged beats for Detroit's premier rough and rugged MC, Guilty Simpson. The two smash through 17 tracks of raw, unadulterated hip-hop with only two guest spots - one from MED and one from J Dilla (a previously unreleased interlude from the Jaylib sessions). Many of the tracks are dubbed as "OJ Simpson" remixes, foreshadowing the 'Lib & Guilty collab album of the same name coming out in the near future. 17 tracks total on 2 LPs, packaged in a hand numbered, silk screened sleeve. Heavyweight hip-hop material.

Lab favorite Geof McFetridge teams up with Australian eyewear company Colab for this extremely limited run of sunglasses. The overall design is probably the slickest project with GMF's name on it and has all the clever signatures to his style: Feet shapes at the end of the arms, eyes on the back of the rim, and little hand shaped removable sunglass stand(so it looks like a crouching animal). A personable design to you, a fresh look to everyone else.
