The clip matrix gives you an instant view of clip status: what's loaded, what's playing, and what's being recorded. The APC40 has two banks of eight knobs. The first set controls Global parameters so you'll always have instant access to your main sends, pans, and other essentials. The second bank of eight knobs is dynamically reassigned to the Track you select. You can control eight track parameters at a time, and as you switch channels, the Track knobs follow your focus. For example, you might be working with the Beat Decoder on track two. When you switch to track four, the eight Track knobs that you had been controlling the Beat Decoder with are now controlling the Flangeverb on track four. You'll even notice that the settings for each knob load on the light rings so you'll immediately see each knob's status.

The APC40 also enables special clip-status views and feedback that only the APC40's matrix can display. The matrix is not limited to only 40 clips: you can scroll and shift, enabling you to access, control, and perform with an unlimited number of cells.

The APC40 has a wide range of controllers. The eight Global knobs can access four banks of controls; the eight Track knobs control nine different track parameters each. This gives you a massive total of 72 controllers that are dynamically reassigned each time you switch tracks. Channel faders, bus faders, and a crossfader give you smooth control of key values. You have even more control power with special controls including Tap Tempo, Tempo Nudge, record enables, solo/cues, and two assignable footswitch inputs.

OUR OPINION
As Akai's answer the Korg's Nano series, the LPD8 holds up very well and actually has a few advantages. While both feature ulra-slim profiles and portability, the LPD8 combines pads AND knobs in one unit (although the knobs are rather short) whereas you would have to buy 2 Nanos (the PAD and KONTROL) to get these features with Korg. It is also slightly shorter than the nanoPAD and features a nice matte finish with rounded corners. Recommended.

The LPK25 is a vast improvement on KORG's portable mini-USB keyboard. Whereas the KORG had "key-like' computer keys, the LPK25 actually has real mini-keys that are velocity sensitive. A must for keyboard players and producers who want to work with software need to express with real feeling keys. The added features of arpeggiator and memory make this a steal for under $70. Recommended.

OVERVIEW
With padKontrol, Korg introduces their version of the drum pad controller. Like most of their products, Korg one-ups the competition here, adding more features than their competitors. In addition to the 16 velocity sensitive drum pad controls, the key feature of the padKontrol is the additional X-Y pad (similar to one on the Kaospad) which when used in conjunction with the drum pads, adds further control and expression.

FEATURES
The X-Y pad adds real-time control of both flam and roll timing and dynamics. Moving from left to right increases the speed of the roll, or the distance between the "flammed" notes. Moving up increase the volume of the roll, or the second note in the flam. This is a highly expressive and intuitive way to produce these natural drum techniques. With an optional footswitch, you can even add real "kick" drum parts, or close a open hi-hat.

Further Control: Drums are just the beginning. A MIDI message can be assigned to each pad, and they can be set for momentary or toggle operation. In addition to sending a value as the pad is touched, a specific value can be sent as the pad is released, so they can be used like buttons or switches to control any function on your soft synths and DAWs.

Based on Korg's KAOSS technology, the X-Y pad can be assigned to control any two continuous controllers in real-time. You might set the X Axis to control pitch bend on a synth while the Y Axis controls reverb depth. Or set them to control filter cutoff and resonance, or multiple delay parameters for evocative and expressive performance and mixing possibilities.

Two assignable knobs provide continuous control of two other MIDI parameters. You can easily invert the values sent from any of these controllers so you can quickly adjust them to your needs. Even the footswitch input can be set as a momentary or toggle switch for any parameter. Like the X-Y and trigger pads, the pedal also can send a specific release value.

Visual Indicators: Whenever you strike a pad or move a controller the built-in display shows what message or value is being sent, giving you accurate confirmation of what you're doing. The pads have a striking visual behavior, which will move you to visually groove along with your playing. Pads assigned to notes light up when struck and then shut off. Pads assigned to CC messages stay lit to show their status. Three variations of the Illumination mode cause the trigger pads to light up in unique patterns. Two begin when a trigger pad is struck, and a third starts automatically when the padKONTROL sits idle for a few minutes.

Management: Once you have all the controllers set the way you like, you can save the entire set of assignments as a "User Scene." Sixteen User Scenes are available in the padKONTROL itself, and they can be quickly selected using the pads. In addition, thirty preset scenes are included, designed to instantly match the padKONTROL to some of the most popular music software programs. The padKONTROL also comes with free Editor/Librarian software. Using the computer's graphic capabilities, the Editor/Librarian software makes it easy to create, store and organize vast libraries of scenes and "scene sets."

The padKONTROL comes with a special dfh SUPERIOR drum kit plug-in instrument from Toontracks, created to work exclusively with this controller. This 260 MB drum kit features multiple velocity levels, and a variety of microphone positions - 2,700 samples in all - so you can start laying down beats as soon as you get it out of the box!

The X-Gator can be made to gate each patch to create unique 16-32 step rhythmic patterns for every onboard sound, all automatically synchronised to MIDI clock from a sequencer; just press and hold one key to groove along to a track with style. The XioSynth also comes with 200 onboard patches which you can tweak and distort using the optional filter distortion to create an even greater range of sounds; from clean and sparkly to grimey and gritty. In addition, 60 of the patches were created by acclaimed artists and producers such as Roots Manuva, Skeewiff, Shimon and James Zabiela.

Interface
The XioSynth's included USB powered interface features 2 Audio Ins / 2 Outs for high quality recording and playback as well as 1 MIDI out and 1USB MIDI in/out. An onboard interface like this is rare to find on a keyboard and allows you to record from the inputs, as well as simultaneously stream the onboard synth audio directly to the sequencer via the USB cable.

MIDI Controller
In addition to synthesizing and audio interfacing, the keyboard is also a comprehensive MIDI keyboard with 49 semi-weighted keys, a control surface with 11 knobs and buttons (doubled to 22 by a Group A/B switch), plus a freely assignable Touchpad and joystick. 4-Channel Control
The SCS.3m features two channel strips for control of two channels of a software mixer at any one time. However, each channel strip can be switched to control an additional two channels for a total of four channels of control with the 3m, providing a scalable interface while remaining portable at the same time. When switching between decks the 3m will remember which control mode each deck was on (FX or EQ) and will automatically update the sliders to that channel's last settings.

EQ / FX Control Modes
The 4 touch sensitive sliders and 4 buttons in each channel strip can be switched to control either EQ or FX functions (or remapped for other on screen controls). This allows for 8 parameters and 8 buttons to be accessed within each channel (deck). When switching between control modes the sliders and button states will automatically update to reflect their correct settings.

USB Hub
The built in powered 4-port USB hub can be used to connect additional SCS.3 products to the SCS.3m allowing a single USB cable to be connected to the computer. With 2 ports on the rear of the unit it's possible to connect devices very quickly for fast setups in mobile environments. 2 additional ports on the inside of the back panel of the SCS.3m allow cables to be routed from additional 3 series controllers or storage devices such as flash drives. With a power connection the USB hub ensures that devices receive enough power for complete stability in any performance environment.

Traktor
Every SCS.3m comes with the ability to unlock the LE version of Native Instruments' award winning Traktor PRO software. One of the first true Traktor LE controllers, the SCS.3m is specifically designed to incorporate full application feedback from Traktor, ensuring complete parity between hardware and software.

The sturdy metal construction is a big plus as well (especially when most similar units are made of plastic), and the response of the JOG wheels is very accurate. In addition, with the bundled Traktor 3 LE software you can start DJing digitally right out the box. This is a complete digital DJing solution all in one affordable package.

FADER CURVE CONTROL
The fader curve of each fader can be adjusted to the preferred characteristics for long mixes, scratching and any other style.

OUR OPINION
The VCI-300 is an impressive all-in-one digital djing solution. Everything you need is included in the box except for your laptop and headphones. This is a great unit for those not interested in owning a pair of turntables or a mixer and just want to focus solely on digital djing. The price tag might seem steep, but when you consider the fact you are getting an all-in-one unit with Serato ITCH that requires no turntables or mixer (which can run well over $1000), it is actually a deal. Recommended.

While it lacks a large launch button matrix, the traditional mixer layout that matches the Ableton screen will appeal to DJs/Producers looking for a controller that performs great for multitrack mixing. Combined with the included Ableton Live Lite software, the VCM-600 is an excellent all-in-one choice.
