OVERVIEW Programming drums is one of the most challenging aspects of MIDI/digital production. Keyboard style MIDI controllers, cannot compete with the feeling and results you get from tapping out drums or looping sounds on a set of drum machine pads. Since the introduction...   expand review  of the Robert Linn designed MPC series, AKAI has developed a reputation for producing the most intuitive and well-built drum machines. With the MPD 16, Akai give us the best aspect of the MPC, the drum pads, without the cost of the entire MPC. The MPD 16 enables users of all MIDI capable sound modules and computer based music programs, to benefit from the use of pads when programming their drum parts. It is also useful for triggering sounds (loops, sound effects, etc.) while djing or working at the studio. USES - MIDI controller - Drum programming - Loop triggering - USB and MIDI connection FEATURES Like the MPC, the MPD 16 comes with 32 (16 to a bank) assignable touch sensitive rubber pads. You assign notes to the pads with key group names (e.g. A5), same as you would with any MIDI-Controller. A FULL LEVEL button allows you to bypass the touch-sensitive design of the pads, and play every note as loud as possible. The 16 LEVEL button spreads one note across all 16 pads, each with a different velocity (loudness). A slider is also included, which can be assigned to control different MIDI parameters. The MPD can be connected to your computer or Akai Z-series sampler via USB or to another MIDI device with its MIDI OUT port. When connected by USB, no power source is required, otherwise it can be powered by a standard DC 9V adaptor. OUR OPINION Whether your programming drums or triggering loops and sounds live, you can't beat the feel and action of the MPC pads. The MPD features all the best aspects of the MPC pad system: the pad design and feel, the "Full Level" and "16 Level" options as well as the slider. If you feel like your drums are missing a certain punch or bounce, the feel of the MPD's could greatly improve your performance. If you are a dj or performer who likes to incorporate a laptop into your set, you may also find the MPD 16 beneficial. You can trigger sounds and loops with complete accuracy while hitting them as hard as you like. In addition, the unit is 100% powered via the laptop's USB port. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW Alesis enters the controller market with the Photon series. The striking feature of this series is the slick Alesis design, functionality, and extra features that have been carried over from the rest of their respected product line. The Photon X25 is the...   expand review  deluxe edition of the series, with both midi-controller and audio interface capabilities, a great user feel, and maxed-out features. This is an incredibly strong entry to the controller/interface market. FEATURES In addition to its sleek look and illuminated controls, the Photon X25 is a very functional controller. The 25 velocity-sensitive, semi-weighted keys have excellent action and feel, very solid. The 10 chunky, rubber-covered knobs, as well as being super-sensitive and endless, also have a great feel. As I am testing this model out, I instantly want to get "all Daft Punk" on it; it seems like too much fun to use. In addition, the Photon X25 features Alesis' proprietary Axyz Controller Dome. Just assign an effect or instrument to the dome, and control the parameters by moving your hand above the dome (360 degrees and up and down). With 10 knobs, ten buttons, and three active layers, the Photon X25 gives you immediate access to over sixty, fully-assignable controls. In addition, the Photon X25 features a deluxe LCD screen (vs. LED display found on most competitors), that gives you detailed readouts and faster access to the 20 editable, storable configurations (we told you that this was maxed-out). And finally tweak your sounds even further with the two full-sized pitch and modulation wheels (also with that great-feeling rubber coating). As an audio interface, the Photon X25 is no slouch either. It features fully balanced 1/4" stereo inputs and outputs, delivering studio-quality 24bit 44.1/48kHz audio. It connects to your computer via USB (quite possibly the only non-maxed out feature here), and can be powered via USB bus power, 4x C-batteries, or an optional power adaptor. The Photon X25 is both PC and OSX ready. OUR OPINION For the hip-hop producer, the Photon X25 might be overkill. You probably won't need all the controls here. But for an electronic producer, the Photon X25 offers ultimate flexibility for home production and using such multi-functional production programs such as Reason. In addition, for use in live settings, you can have all your settings ready and available at the turn of a knob. But aside from all the features, the strongest aspect here is definitely the design and functionality. All lit up, the Photon X25 looks impressive, and all the controls feel great. And lastly, the price is a steal at around $50 less than products with similar specs (and much less extra-features). Recommended. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW Edirol's PCR-M30 is a USB MIDI Controller in the mid-price range between M-Audio and brands like Novation. It is able to control more parameters and boasts a more durable build than the models in the lower price range. A main advantage of...   expand review  this particular model is that it is able to control all MIDI parameters in software production applications. Other distinguishing features include the feel its keys offer, its solid construction and a layout designed to function as quickly as possible. If you're willing to pay a little extra but are still on a budget, the PCR-M30 is a smart choice. USES: - Controlling virtual instruments & programs - Controlling MIDI compatible devices - USB/MIDI Interface FEATURES: The PCR-M30 has 32 full-sized, velocity sensitive keys each spring loaded and lined with felt for better feel and response action. In total it offers 27 assignable controls including 27 fully assignable controls - 8 knobs, 8 sliders, 9 switches, and 2 pedal ports. In addition it comes with a pitch and modulation control and connections for optional expression and sustain pedals (sold separately). One (1) preset memory and fifteen (15) user memory settings are available, for recalling the settings of your favorite programs quickly. In addition to being a keyboard controller, the PCR-30 can also be used as a stand alone USB-MIDI interface with its MIDI IN and OUT ports. The unit is also powered by your computer's USB port. Also included is a V-Link setting that allows real-time control of digital video with the use of an Edirol DV-7PR. OUR OPINION: If you are sure you will be using a USB-MIDI controller frequently, it's worth investing a little more into a PCR-M30. Edirol products are unique in the fact that they are built to high standards like more expensive brands, yet keep the features limited to only those you really need like less expensive brands. Overall the feel of the keyboard is both durable and playable while its design is simple and compact. -mgmnt

OVERVIEW The Kontrol49 is the big brother of our bestselling MicroKontrol controller. The main upgrade is the inclusion of 49 full-sized keys (MicroKontrol has 37 Mini-Keys). The 49 keys also feature the same technology and feel as Korg's professional workstation instruments (ie Triton),...   expand review  and have eight velocity curves to tailor the response to your own playing or specific applications. Additional upgrades include pitch and modulation wheels, and the newly designed vector joystick which gives you the option of simultaneously controlling 2 functions. In addition, it now comes with the Creative Kontrol Pak 2 software bundle which includes Live Lite 4 Korg Edition, Sample Tank 2 Korg Edition, UVI Korg Edition, Reason Adapted 3.0 for Korg, and MDE-X. USES: - Controlling virtual instruments & programs - Controlling MIDI compatible devices - USB/MIDI Interface - Drum programming FEATURES The obvious spotlight feature on the Kontrol49 are the keys. For those who are serious about keyboard play, the Kontrol49 offers the best combination of full-featured controller and realistic keyboard play. In addition, with the eight velocity curves, it is easier to achieve the sound you want from your soft synths programs (quick stabs or longer sustain). The Kontrol series is also the first controller series in this price range to feature drum pad controllers. We at the Lab have always advocated using drum pads for programming drums, and the Kontrol49 gives you that option and more. The additional (8) assignable sliders, (8) rotary knobs, and new vector joystick give you full control of today's complex programs and a wide range of MIDI-instruments. A useful innovation here includes the backlit LCD screens for each slider-knob combo with customizable tags and color coding. This eliminates the need for messy tape with assignments written on it, and allows you to change settings faster. In addition to presets for most popular programs, you also get Korg's Editor/Librarian software which allows you to create and store custom configurations on your computer. For Reason 3.0 users, the Kontrol49 comes Native Mode ready. OUR OPINION The little-brother MicroKontrol is one of the first controllers we recommend to customers. When you want to step up your studio from an intermediate/portable studio, we would recommend the Kontrol49. It simply has all the features you could want in a controller, and all of them are quite useful. The realistic keyboard play and drum pads are two of the standout features here, and it's all brought together by Korg's reputation for usability and quality.

OVERVIEW The microX keyboard combines some of the best that Korg's legendary synths and controllers offer, wrapping it up in a compact and very portable package. The microX comes loaded with hundreds of options (pre-loaded sounds, effects options, and programs) for creating music...   expand review  and also functions as an excellent controller. There are 25 velocity-sensitive keys, 4 control knobs and an X/Y joystick. The features make it an excellent choice for small home studios and on the road production; it also comes in a hard plastic carrying case like a proper piece of hardware. FEATURES The microX is built from the same platform as Korg's Triton series, employing the acclaimed HI synthesis system for generating all its internal sounds. The microX features an huge, impressive battery of built in sounds, with many options for controlling them. It comes pre-loaded with over 1000 built in sounds and programs, some of them Korg "classics" and some created specifically for the microX, with a special emphasis on dance sounds and ethnic timbres. In "combination mode" you are able to combine up to 8 different programs – with 384 combinations already pre-loaded. There are also 89 different effects to choose from, with real time modulation and tempo control available for most of them. A powerful dual polyphonic arpeggiators provide even more possibilities, with 250 pre-loaded patterns ranging from realistic phrases to distinctive flourishes. Korg makes it easy to use this wide array of sounds with great navigation, and quick ways of finding + previewing sounds. As a controller, the microX features everything you need to synch up with your computer. There are four main knobs and a 4-way joystick, all of which are assignable and work with just about every software program (64 external templates are provided for easy use with the most popular software synths and production programs). USB connection (cable included) allows you to connect directly to the computer. They also include Editor software for reworking the microX's sounds from your computer- use as a standalone program or as a plug-in with your existing software. OUR OPINION The microX continues Korg's tradition of top of the line keyboards, and improves on their more recent entry's into affordable synths and controllers. The fact that you have a synthesizer and controller in one piece is a great thing in itself, but Korg always takes things a step further and has really provided an impressive, useful tool with the microX. OVERVIEW With padKontrol, Korg introduces their version of the drum pad controller. Like most of their products, Korg one-ups the competition here, adding more features than their competitors. In addition to the 16 velocity sensitive drum pad controls, the key feature of the...   expand review  padKontrol is the additional X-Y pad (similar to one on the Kaospad) which when used in conjunction with the drum pads, adds further control and expression. FEATURES The X-Y pad adds real-time control of both flam and roll timing and dynamics. Moving from left to right increases the speed of the roll, or the distance between the "flammed" notes. Moving up increase the volume of the roll, or the second note in the flam. This is a highly expressive and intuitive way to produce these natural drum techniques. With an optional footswitch, you can even add real "kick" drum parts, or close a open hi-hat. Further Control: Drums are just the beginning. A MIDI message can be assigned to each pad, and they can be set for momentary or toggle operation. In addition to sending a value as the pad is touched, a specific value can be sent as the pad is released, so they can be used like buttons or switches to control any function on your soft synths and DAWs. Based on Korg's KAOSS technology, the X-Y pad can be assigned to control any two continuous controllers in real-time. You might set the X Axis to control pitch bend on a synth while the Y Axis controls reverb depth. Or set them to control filter cutoff and resonance, or multiple delay parameters for evocative and expressive performance and mixing possibilities. Two assignable knobs provide continuous control of two other MIDI parameters. You can easily invert the values sent from any of these controllers so you can quickly adjust them to your needs. Even the footswitch input can be set as a momentary or toggle switch for any parameter. Like the X-Y and trigger pads, the pedal also can send a specific release value. Visual Indicators: Whenever you strike a pad or move a controller the built-in display shows what message or value is being sent, giving you accurate confirmation of what you're doing. The pads have a striking visual behavior, which will move you to visually groove along with your playing. Pads assigned to notes light up when struck and then shut off. Pads assigned to CC messages stay lit to show their status. Three variations of the Illumination mode cause the trigger pads to light up in unique patterns. Two begin when a trigger pad is struck, and a third starts automatically when the padKONTROL sits idle for a few minutes. Management: Once you have all the controllers set the way you like, you can save the entire set of assignments as a "User Scene." Sixteen User Scenes are available in the padKONTROL itself, and they can be quickly selected using the pads. In addition, thirty preset scenes are included, designed to instantly match the padKONTROL to some of the most popular music software programs. The padKONTROL also comes with free Editor/Librarian software. Using the computer's graphic capabilities, the Editor/Librarian software makes it easy to create, store and organize vast libraries of scenes and "scene sets." The padKONTROL comes with a special dfh SUPERIOR drum kit plug-in instrument from Toontracks, created to work exclusively with this controller. This 260 MB drum kit features multiple velocity levels, and a variety of microphone positions - 2,700 samples in all - so you can start laying down beats as soon as you get it out of the box! OUR OPINION The padKontrol is the most powerful drum pad controller available. The addition of the X-Y pad controls, the ability to add a footswitch, and the illuminated indicators, are unique features that enable you to get the most feel and flexibility out of your controller. And with Korg's reputation for quality, you know you are getting a machine that's built to last. Recommended. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW The Keystation 61es is a full-sized, semi-weighted keyboard MIDI-controller intended for both program manipulation and true keyboard playing. The minimal design of the keyboard puts the emphasis on playing more than most MIDI-controllers on the market. Like all M-Audio products, the...   expand review  Keystation 61es was produced to high standards, yet maintains a low price point by including only the features you need. USES - The semi-weighted keys are excellent for piano simulation - Controlling software, sound modules and samplers FEATURES As the name suggests, the Keystation 61es has 61 full-sized keys. What separates it from all other controllers is that the velocity sensitive keys are also semi-weighted. "Semi-weighted" means the keys have a response that is similar to the action on a real piano. This is an invaluable feature for those who actually want to learn to play the keyboard, in addition to controlling sound modules and software. Controls include pitch bend and modulation wheels, a volume slider and octave +/- buttons. The Keystation features a USB port, and is also equipped with a separate MIDI out connection to control external devices (samplers, sound modules, etc.). The unit ships with a 6' USB cable and instruction manual. The Keystation 61es is plug-and-play compliant with both Mac OSX and Windows XP, which means there is no need for drivers or other complicated setup processes. Other options include the ability to power the unit with a 9VDC power adapter and the option of attaching a separate sustain foot pedal (both sold separately). OUR OPINION The main reason to consider this controller over others is the keys. If you learned on a traditional piano, and want to translate that into the electronic music, this model will ease the transition. Conversely, if you want to learn how to play piano, this will also do the job. Until recently, semi-weighted keys were only found on expensive ($600+) MIDI-controllers, and once again M-Audio leads the way in bringing the same technology for a fraction of the price. Another attractive feature of this keyboard is its simple layout and design, which lets you concentrate on playing music instead of noodling with sounds. If you are looking for something to control numerous soft-synths and samplers, this may not be the right choice, but for those who want a practice/performance MIDI-Controller, the 61es's features are all you'll need.
