WHat To Know about cartridges

Stylus Shape: Most cartridges feature a diamond at the tip of the cartridge. The shape of the diamond dictates price. The most inexpensive shape is conical. The standard cartridge shape is elliptical. Elliptical styluses are shaped to fit into the groove while reducing record wear. As you go up from there, the shape becomes more detailed and complex, allowing for an even better fit into the groove. Tip: stay away from ceramic tip cartridges, they damage your records (we don’t carry those).
Bonded vs. Nude Design: Most cartridges feature a diamond tip attached to a metal shank connected to the cantilever. This is a bonded diamond design. Some higher priced cartridges feature no shank, but rather a whole diamond attached to the cantilever. This known as a nude diamond design. Nude diamond is preferred for its lighter design which is more sensitive to the record groove. This results in less distortion and more sound detail.

Moving magnet and moving coil are the 2 different internal cartridge designs.
Most cartridges are moving magnet. They range from beginner to expert models. We recommend moving magnet for most users.
Moving coil is for advanced users. They are more delicate, do not have replaceable styluses, and sometimes need special phono preamps.
Moving coil mechanism is lighter on the record groove, which results in better tracking and more sound detail. Also, most moving coil cartridges have a lower power output, so you’ll need a phono preamp with MC setting.
