Lab Overview

High quality reissue of an early Impulse standout from accomplished drummer Roy Haynes. Out Of The Afternoon was his first and only record as a leader on Creed Taylor’s iconic imprint, but Haynes became a lifetime member of the club after playing on Oliver Nelson’s Blues And The Abstract Truth and Ray CharlesGenius + Soul = Jazz, some of the label’s first hit records. Out Of The Afternoon is one of those perfectly listenable jazz albums you can put on any time any place and feel the vibe elevate. Haynes’ drumming is intricately textured and on point throughout, but honestly, this is Roland Kirk’s album as much as anyone else’s. Apart from his virtuosic lines on the tenor sax as well as his bizarre 1920s Buescher alto and Saxello soprano models, C flute and nose flute (your guess is as good as mine) the homie does it like this without ever devolving into atonal skronking or Ornette Coleman-esque next shit (here's a real WTF factoid for you - a certain late night host once toured with Kirk as his supporting act and was frequently introduced by Kirk as "a young brother who knows the black experience and knows all about the white devils... please welcome Jay Leno!"). Tommy Flanagan and Henry Grimes shine on piano and bass, respectively. High-quality Acoustic Sounds edition cut from the original analog tapes, recommended.
