Lab Overview

Heads Up marks Warpaint's 3rd studio full length and yes, it sounds incredible (just as you knew it would). Here the Warpaint seem to have really taken stride in an eclectic sound that doesn't try to pigeonhole itself, but rather takes strength in its diversity. Like previous efforts The Fool and the eponymous Warpaint, the ladies aren't afraid to go outside the realms of conventional indie rock and incorporate elements of other music styles - most notably hip-hop, dance and electronic. For Heads Up, bassist Theresa Wayman is quoted as as taking cues from Kendrick Lamar, while drummer Stella Mozgawa has drawn inspiration from the late great J. Dilla. You might not expect that, but it's actually easy to hear on tracks like the moody and brooding "Dre," "By Your Side," or "Don't Wanna." The band doesn't just stick to one thing however, they're able to change focus and make it work just as well. Indie dance? Check "New Song" or "The Stall." Post-punk vibes? "So Good." Upbeat rock & roll? "Heads Up."  Breakout potential? Most definitely. Recommended.
