Fourth studio album from Bay Area post-metal voyagers Deafheaven! Ordinary Corrupt Human Love arrives nearly 3 years after 2015’s New Bermuda, and was recorded with longtime producer Jack Shirley directly to tape at his Oakland studio. There’s an increasing number of gentle passages, suggest they’re growing more comfortable in these vulnerable zones, but still sound urgent as ever. Some tracks on OCHL don’t even bloom into full-on black metal, like the theatric “Night People” featuring Chelsea Wolfe. Deafheaven may not have been the first to mix shoegaze with black metal (the band are quick to emphasize this point), but there’s certainly no one else out there pivoting from Cocteau Twins to Burzum as smoothly and effortlessly as these guys do on “Canary Yellow.” Also check out “Glint” and “Worthless Animal.” Indie exclusive blue colored double vinyl pressing.
