Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker is best known for the techno he makes as Gifted & Blessed. As Frankie Reyes, the Angeleno of Puerto Rican descent puts his classical training to work, covering traditional boleros and valses. The material is rooted in Cuban and Peruvian musical forms, but takes on a otherworldly character when played through Reyes's synthesizer. There's an underwater quality that makes the music feel as if it's dripping out of your speakers. Boleros Valses Y Mas seems to be more about atmosphere than anything else. A similar feeling to The Caretaker's An Empty Bliss Beyond This World, although not quiet as murky. Perfect Sunday afternoon material for this sweltering summer.
