After a strong 2017 that yielded some of our favorite new LPs and reissues of the year, Music From Memory continue to prove their propensity for sniffing out immaculate balearic bliss both new and old. Fresh off the back of a solid debut LP for L.I.E.S., Terekke joins the ranks of Gaussian Curve and the mysterious Garrett as one of a small handful of artists recording new music for the label, and he assimilates effortlessly with Improvisational Loops. It's the result of a project that started way back in 2012 at Body Actualized Center, the magical yoga center-cum-music venue of Bushwick past that played host to some of Brooklyn's greatest parties circa 2012-13 but will forever be remembered as the place where people used to actually drag their synths out onto the floor and perform ambient drones during yoga classes. Says the label: “In the spirit of past ’New Age’ or Minimal music, it aims to open up a space within the room giving the listener a chance to explore inward or outward. It was recorded using a digital synthesizer, reverb, and looper.” If you close your eyes and concentrate, tracks like “soft g,” “l8r h8r” and the 20-minute “Nuwav2” recall images of a girl with an undercut hitting the Crescent Lunge at 8am off the Jefferson L just as easily as they conjure an Ibiza sunrise. “220+g” almost sounds like an early sketch for one of LTJ Bukem’s intelligent drum & bass excursions circa 1998 (that’s a good thing). Recommended.
