The Vivian Girls made a sudden return after a nearly decade long absence, and we’re glad they did. Memory sees the three members of the group apply what they have learned across their projects in the meantime - Cassie Ramone with The Babies, Katy Goodman in La Sera, and Ali Koehler in Upset. Far from a nostalgia-driven ego trip, his reunion is based in the chemistry - both musically and personally - between the three members of the group, and it’s clear they had no trouble making up for lost time. In the years of the group’s absence, elements of their sound have become integral to the current sound of indie music - it’s difficult to believe that they didn’t inspire groups like like Girlpool, Ovlov, and Frankie Cosmos, among endless others across Brooklyn and the world. “Most of All” sets the stage immediately, sugary harmonies buried beneath a haze of guitar din. “Sick” begins with a scuzzy power-pop riff, the ethereal vocals creeping in like they’re washed in FM static. “I’m Far Away” begins with a driving bassline, sneered vocals and guitar cacophony would sit nicely next to The Wipers on a road-trip mixtape. Overall, Memory is no mere look back - it’s a refined continuation of what made this band a touchstone for a generation of indie musicians. This album is pressed on 180 gram maroon colored vinyl, and includes a printed inner sleeve with full album lyrics.
