  • Official reissue of Fela Ransome Kuti's 1973 masterpiece. Gentleman found the afrobeat pioneer once again making poignant social commentary through righteous rhythms and grooves. Along with his Africa 70 band, they challenge the colonial mentality of his fellow Africans who adopt European customs and clothing in the African heat (hence the cover art featuring a monkey on a suited body) - "I know what to wear but my friend don't know / I am not a gentleman like that! / I be Africa man original." Of course as Fela ponders these social issues, the underlying groove cannot be denied. Also included are the two afrobeat scorchers "Igbe" and "Fe Fe Eye Ne Fe." Quality 50th anniversary pressing on colored vinyl with gold foil obi, liner notes and proper repro of the original cover from Knitting Factory Records. Recommended.

"1973’s Gentleman is the 7th in the series of celebratory Fela Kuti 50th Anniversary reissues. Like its predecessors in the series, this version will be available on exclusive colored vinyl (Igbo Smoke) and the LP will be wrapped in a gold foil obi strip with a brief essay on the album and Fela's global impact on music." - Knitting Factory Records

    • 50th anniversary edition
    • 'igbo smoke' colored vinyl
    • includes obi strip + printed liner note insert
    • limited edition
    • original release year: 1973
