Lab Overview

Classic mid-70s deejay album, featuring Prince Jazzbo voicing over all Lee Perry production (Perry-produced deejay albums are not nearly as common as you’d think). "Ital Corner" is the centerpiece of the set, using a dub version of Max Romeo’s "One Step Forward." The intro on this kills. The rhythm starts up, Max’s first "one step forward, two step backward" line comes through the speaker, and then Jazzbo answers back like a sleeping giant "one step forward, none step backward." Just the coolest delivery. It’s impossible to top that cut, but there’s some great moments of Lee Perry inspiration, like the TV show chit chat running through the background of "Blood Dunza," laugh track & all. I don’t know what the hell that’s about, but it’s these kind of anomalies that keep the show entertaining. "Prophet Live" is another addition to the Satta rhythm canon, and the b-side response "Dreadlocks Corner" would probably rival "Ital" with some Max Romeo vocal seasoning. 10 tracks total, with a dub for "Prophet Live." Recommended.
