One of the hardest Roy Ayers records to find, and one of the best. Anchored by Roy Ayers' much admired vibraphone work, exquisite musical arrangement and laidback vocals, the soundtrack for Pam Grier's revenge saga has become as iconic as the film itself. The uptempo funk of opener "Coffy Is the Color" sets it off firing on all cylinders; it's an all-timer with blaxploitation scratch guitar and Roy's signature minor chord modulations. "Escape" is the quintessential blaxploitation cut; "Aragon" is another beautiful example of Ayers' ability to merge funk with action music. "Brawling Broads," "Coffy Baby" featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the pensive and summery "Priscilla's Theme" are other highlights. High quality 2025 pressing from Elemental Music who have been killing the jazz and soul reissues, get on it. Recommended!
