Probably the most famous album billed directly to Augustus Pablo, East Of The River Nile is like a greatest hits collection for him circa late 70s. The tracks were recorded everywhere from Randy's to the Black Ark, and represent some of his most famous instrumentals & dubs for a variety of producers. While most of these tracks can rightly be found in other places, the versions here are always unique mixes or later/alternate takes. For instance this album's excellent version of "East of The River Nile" is completely different from the one we have on 7". A bit slower, with patiently dubbed melodica, some cool electronic washes and a stripped down version of that famous drum and bass. I almost like this one better. The big "Africa 1983" is also here in full instrumental version, as well as recognizable cuts like the pounding "Jah Light" and meditative "Chant To Jah." Easily one of Pablo's finest moments, East Of The River is a strong listen all the way through. Recommended.
