  • Hard to find live date from foundational bebop pianist, Bud Powell. The Essen Jazz Festival Concert features a live appearance from Powell along with bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny "Klook" Clarke. The trio is joined by tenor sax titan Coleman Hawkins for much of the recording, as well. While late career live appearances from Powell categorically get a bad rap, this release should change that idea. This April 2, 1960 performance is surprisingly consistent, with the pianist sounding comfortable as he moves through the standards focused set. There's plenty of bebop to take in along with some bluesier moments. Nine tracks in all. Released by ORG Music on indie exclusive white and green swirl colored vinyl housed in a full color sleeve with printed inner sleeve.
