  • “The music on this record was made in collaboration with painter Anna Liber Lewis. Anna and I have known each other almost all our lives.  We grew up in London with overlapping social circles and shared early music experiences as teenagers. The collaboration unfolded over several months. We worked in tandem from conversation and correspondence. I made music and Anna responded to it with drawings and paintings, apart from the last track, which I made after having seen her work. It was performed and exhibited at a show called Muscle Memory at the Elephant West gallery in London in early 2019.” Well, it seems like Mr. Hebden covered the conceptual end of this record, so we’ll fill in the rest of the blanks. Anna Painting is a new EP from Four Tet, with some of the fiercest club compositions in his catalog. The title track starts with sub-bass rumble, chirpy drum machines, and skittering snares which fade to a nearly ambient coda that alludes to contemporary textural electronic music along the lines of OPN and the prepared piano of Kelly Moran. “Lahaina Noon” begins with congas emerging from delicate birdsong, swirling touch-tone keyboard fills and moody chords lead way to a murmuring kick drum and jagged synth lines. “Breath” is Kieran on a bit of a Vangelis tip, sweeping synths that fade to silence. Packaged in a picture sleeve, pressed on standard black vinyl.
