Poliça is an American synth-pop band from Minneapolis, MN formed in 2011. They self-released their debut album Give You The Ghost on Valentines Day 2012, shortly after they attended SXSW and scored an opening spot for Bon Iver, helping to gain the attention of Mom + Pop, who reissued their debut in addition to 2013’s Shulamith, 2016’s United Crushers, and 2018’s Music For The Long Emergency. 2018 was a difficult year for frontwoman Channy Leaneagh, beginning the year with an accident leading to smashed vertebrae, leaving her with limited mobility for months. Her self-identity became attached to her experiences of physical and mental trauma, and she began to consider what it would be like to live without the past as a burden. “I felt there were many things I could look at and say, ‘This happened to me but I’m okay now. It’s not happening anymore and I got the care I needed for it. Now it’s time to rewrite the story I tell about myself and to myself.” She approaches her journey with unflinching honesty, her processed vocals suiting the synthesized backdrops. “Driving” is sharp snares and restrained sub-bass, “Tata” is expansive beats and up-front vocals. “Forget Me Now” harkens back to the group’s earlier records, reverberating percussion and warm acoustic tones.
