The Watts, Los Angeles group The Sylvers released The Sylvers II in 1973, and the album (written by Leon Sylvers III & produced by Jerry Butler and Keg Johnson) has been a goldmine of samples for producers: Madlib (for MF DOOM), Homeboy Sandman, 50 Cent, Ghostface Killah, Black Milk, Roc Marciano, David Banner, 9th Wonder, & more have flipped, chopped up and/or rapped on beats inspired by the 11-tracker. Full of funk, boogie, and deep soul jams, the group even sings an acapella version of The Beatles' "Yesterday," and this is a welcome reissue from Mr Bongo for sure. The group would go on to have big hits during its career, e.g., "Boogie Fever," "Hot Line," and "High School Dance," but The Sylvers II, captures the outfit before the pop-disco crossover. Highlights include "We Can Make It If We Try," "Stay Away From Me," "Through the Love In My Heart," and "Let It Be Me."

- official reissue
