Imagine the freakiest moments from the original Twin Peaks soundtrack stretched out into an hour-long record, and that’s pretty much what Thought Gang sounds like, because that’s exactly what it is. David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti began recording under the nom de guerre while working on Fire Walk With Me, contributing “The Black Dog Runs At Night” and “A Real Indication” to the film’s score and recording a bevy of additional material off and on between 1992 and 1993 which is only just now seeing an official release. The two visionary artists go way the fuck out, exploring deranged free jazz with Lynch’s nihilistic voiceovers (“Logic And Common Sense,” “Woodcutters From Fiery Ships,” “A Meaningless Conversation”) but also groovy rock & roll (“One Dog Bark”) and extensive drone jams (“Frank 2000,” “Summer Night Noise”), with atmospheric dub passages “Frank 2000 Prelude” and “Multi-Tempo Wind Boogie” and the straight up psycho jazz (shout to inzane_johnny) of “Jack Paints It Red” being particular highlights. It’s as if Lynch and Badalamenti were waiting all these years for a label like Sacred Bones to come along, because honestly, there’s no one else I could imagine getting behind this sort of psycho shit. Limited edition steel grey colored double vinyl pressing, housed in gatefold with printed insert, lyrics, extensive liner notes and code for digital download. Recommended.
