  • Recorded at Record Plant Los Angeles in 1975, Nighthawks At The Diner captures Tom Waits in front of a small audience. Although a relatively new artist at the time of the performance, Herb cohen and Bones Howe, who produced the album, were well aware of Waits's stage prowess, and the gifted lyricist and his hand-picked band (Michael Melvoin on piano, Jim Hughart on bass, Bill Goodwin on drums, and Pete Christlieb on saxophone) deliver an intimate set that successfully captures the mood of a small club. With a full-on jazz ensemble backing up, Waits interchanges between spoken word and singing to entice the crowd (also with a lot of his persona thrown in), and the LP is easily one of the strongest early-career releases from the beloved singer-songwriter. Check out "Eggs And Sausage (In A Cadillac with Susan Michelson), "Better Off Without A Wife," "Warm Beer And Cold Women" "Emotional Weather Report," and "On A Foggy Nights."
