  • Ariel Pink is one of the most polarizing and talented figures in contemporary indie music. Loverboy was released in the middle of Pink’s run as bandleader of the Haunted Grafitti, which culminated in two of the most beloved (and popular) records in his sprawling catalog, Before Today (2010) and Mature Themes (2012). But, let’s take a trip even further back decade and see what Mr. Pink is up to. Loverboy was recorded between October 2001 and July 2002 in a period of creative energy that also led to his 2002 CD-R release House Arrest. Originally recorded in $300 spare room on his 8-track tape recorder, this edition has been freshly remastered from the original tapes in stereo for the first time ever, and expanded with additional tracks. Loverboy is a thrilling exhibit of Pink’s newfound confidence and control over his sound, becoming less abrasive overall and increasingly intricate and melodic. John Maus contributes rigid electronic organ and toy microphone vocals on “Loverboy”, his synths also decorating the hazy, twangy “Ghosts”. “Hobbies Galore” was written by lo-fi touchstone R. Stevie Moore, Pink’s take adding layers of nearly tuneless synthesizers and Pink’s eclectic, detached vocal stylings. This edition includes the 10 tracks from the original plus bonus tracks "Ghosts", "Phoebus Palast" "Doggone (Shegone)", "Blew Straus", and "The Birds Sing In You". The records are packaged in printed inner sleeves with full credits, and an insert with incredibly detailed liner notes by Hedi El Kholti. Recommended.
