  • Sophomore full length from Geoff Barrow's Beak project. II or ">>" continues the trio's exploration into the realms of modern kraut-inspired rock. With a bleak and minimal sound kit Beak are able to conjure the energies of krautrock pioneers such as Can, Amon Duul, and Neu all in one room and in one take (with very few overdubs). It's impressive to say the least the way they are able to move from a driving motorik rhythm, then to discordant stoner metal, then into a droning ambient track. Though the style is very different, the same energy that was prevalent in Portishead (Barrow's other project) can also be found here (sans female vocals of course). 10 tracks on import double vinyl or CD, well recommended.
