"One of the most influential dub albums ever made. The remixing techniques used – radically new for 1973 – helped transform the role of the producer and the engineer to that of creative artists in their own right. Upsetters 14 Dub Black Board Jungle established dub as a genre defined by creative studio intervention, influencing generations of reggae producers and resonating far beyond into the techniques and aesthetics of post-punk, electronic music, hip-hop, and ambient sound design. By transforming the studio into a creative laboratory and elevating the 'version' to an art form, this foundational album reshaped not only Jamaican music, but the whole of modern music production culture. Original Lab review:
Upsetters 14 Dub Black Board Jungle is one of the benchmark dub albums - an all-time great for reggae music, one of Lee Perry's most highly regarded and widely known works, and one of the very first all-dub albums to be released. The background on this is that it's a Lee Perry masterminded affair with a tight and extremely funky version of the Upsetters band laying down the tracks. At the time, Perry did not have a studio of his own, so legend has it that this was mixed down by the Dub Originator himself, King Tubby, with some obvious help from Scratch. The combination of his mixing genius with Lee Perry's wild imagination makes just about every cut on here an amazing slice of perfection.
- classic 1973 dub album by Lee 'Scratch' Perry, mixed by King Tubby
- original 14 track version on vinyl for the first time in 20+ years
- black vinyl pressing (please note: actual pressing color and packaging may differ from mock-up photo)
- newly remastered
- limited edition
- original release year: 1973
- music label: Week-end Records 2026
