  • Massive four years in the making Grateful Dead covers compilation from the Red Hot organization. Day of the Dead was conceived and curated by brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. The wide ranging compilation features over 60 artists from all over the spectrum, and serves to showcase the songwriting and experimentalism of the Dead. With contributions from a list that includes Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Orchestra Baobab, and Tim Hecker, the interpretations are eclectic in both reverence and style. It's all anchored by a house band made up largely of The National that takes a rather conservative approach to the Dead's catalog. This provides a perfect jumping off point for the sheer variety of artists that they support. Standouts include Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks' take on the psychedelic blues of "China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider," the multiple versions of Dead standard "Dark Star," the three pieces given over to Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and the sunning AM gold that Real Estate is able to squeeze out of the hippy jazz of "Here Comes Sunshine." Fifty-nine tracks in all. Released by 4AD on limited edition 10 LP colored vinyl housed in a full color box with outer flip top box, individual full color sleeves and a poster.
