Africaine 808 first popped up on the DJ Muscle series from WT Records in 2013. The Berlin based duo's mix of electronic melodies, blustering percussion and heavy bottom end, all underpinned by deft 808 programming, was some of the most inventive dance music to come out at the time. After a few releases on their own Vulkan Dance the duo of Dirk Leyers and Nomad have found themselves on Phil South's Golf Channel imprint. It's a fitting home for the two industry veterans. Golf Channel has been a label that has released music that's been a bit left of center since its inception and Africaine 808 is no exception. The breezy rhythms of "Lagos, New York" live up to the tracks title. It's a heavily percussive workout that slowly opens up and seems indebted to both of the locales it's named for. "Zombie Jamboree" has less of a subtle touch and gets down to business straight out of the gate. The peculating rhythms are still there, but the pace is amplified and intensified. This is Africaine 808 with their sights set on the dancefloor. Recommended.
