Milky Way is the third full-length from NYC-via-Paris rapper Bas, and it's the anticipated follow-up to Too High to Riot, which dropped in 2016. It doesn't take long for Bas to reveal what he has been up to, as in the opener "Icarus," he declares: "I can't get jiggy with you clowns / I'm busy I've been giving New York City a whole new sound." And he is being serious; he Dreamville rapper's musical choices—jazz-influenced, with warm instrumentation and silky trap cadences—are adding a fresh new layer to the city's rich hip-hop legacy. Over the gliding production, Bas's lets the listeners listen in on his attempt at "finding ground," and his calm, controlled, and melodic flow invokes feelings and thoughts altogether. check out "Tribe" featuring labelmate/head J.Cole, or the gentle 4x4 bounce of "Sanufa." "Boca Raton" featuring ASAP Ferg, and "PDA" are also standouts.
