The final installment in Brian Eno's influential ambient series. 1982's On Land found Eno expanding his sonic palette beyond tape loops and synthesizers to include a complex mix of several non-instruments - from field recordings, found sounds, chains, rocks, sticks, and even unused portions of previous albums' recording sessions. The resulting album is notably darker in mood to previous entries in the series, but still retains the "ambient" feeling that Eno had established.
"On the whole, On Land is quite a disturbed landscape: some of the undertones deliberately threaten the overtones, so you get the pastoral prettiness on top, but underneath there's a dissonance that's like an impending earthquake." - Brian Eno
