Lab Overview

"LOST, adored by its dedicated fan base upon its original release in 2005 on Embedded Records and Definitive Jux, has continued to garner attention over the years from those who are familiar with it. Cool Calm Pete’s education in fine arts as a painter and his day-job with a then-burgeoning lifestyle brand called Supreme sometimes took precedence in his professional life, but his dedication to the craft as a hip hop artist was evident, and fans took notice. The album hasn’t been re-released since its initial 2005 drop; the new 'LOST (Director’s Cut)' has been re-mastered and extended with never-before-heard cuts led by a remix of the title track by Blockhead." - Bubble Wife Records

Original Lab review:

Maybe it's my cultural bias, but this has become one of my favorite hip-hop albums of recent times. Embedded Studios affiliate and Babbletron member Cool Calm Pete really made his mark with this album, and that mark is one that I think most of our customers can easily relate to. Pete's perspective is young, sharp and grounded, like hearing your most convincing friend telling you about his twenty-something life struggles. "Lost" and "Two AM" have been circulating in my head for weeks now, and encapsulate his smart-ass viewpoint, effortless rhymes (with some half-sings in there) and off-beat production style. "Wind Sprints" shows how far he can go with it, impressively laying down fast raps; or even check him doing Slick Rick on "Brush PSA." What I like is that he just doesn't put his head down and spit the most technical black book rhymes with the most emphasis, like most indy emcees with something to prove. Funny that some Asian kid could have more mic charisma than 90% of the shit that comes through here (but also very sign of the times, Koreans will rule the world, check the LPGA son!). Also check: "Wishes and Luck," "Fuck You," and "Dinner and a Movie." Recommended.
