Corey King is a singer-songwriter and composer, his instruments of choice are the keyboard and trombone. Following a move to New York from Houston, Texas, he has found opportunities to perform along the likes of Bonobo, Esperanza Spalding, Mos Def, Gil-Scott Heron, and Lauryn Hill, among many others. A Loveless Sunken Sun is his second full-length release, an expansive collection of tracks described by King as “a testament to the power of angst to foster growth”. The album is the product of two years that brought massive changes to his life - the birth of the son, and the death of a loved one. This record was primarily a solo effort, worked on during a touring-heavy, nomadic period of his life. More experimental than his prior releases, this record demonstrates influence from electronica, krautrock, and afrobeat music. “Fertility Filter” starts with ambient chimes that are enlivened by rugged breaks, low-slung bass, and vocals creeping in at the margins. “Beautiful People” is a more foreboding track, clipped vocal samples, marauding sub-bass, and delicate keyboard leads. A Loveless Sunken Sun is an atmospheric and richly impressionistic work that demonstrates a new side of King’s production mastery. Packaged in a Pantone spot-color jacket and inner, this LP is pressed on limited edition pink colored vinyl. Recommended.
